Oversees the operation, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of the wastewater treatment facility, the organization’s water systems, and key environmental and safety programs. This role ensures efficient plant performance, compliance with federal and state environmental regulations, and the development of sustainable operational practices. The position also leads safety initiatives and supports environmental stewardship across the organization.

Wastewater Treatment Operations
  • Manage daily operations of the wastewater treatment plant, including equipment performance, process adjustments, and routine maintenance.
  • Operate and oversee equipment such as pumps, blowers, aerobic digesters, aeration systems, and filtration units.
  • Adjust return rates, air flow, and treatment parameters based on laboratory results and process conditions.
  • Supervise sludge removal activities and ensure proper disposal practices.
  • Inspect machinery, control panels, and instrumentation for defects or operational issues.
  • Monitor flow rates and ensure treated effluent meets all regulatory discharge requirements.
Water Systems Management
  • Oversee daily operations of the facility’s reverse osmosis (RO) water system.
  • Develop and maintain process flow documentation for water movement from source to discharge.
  • Maintain all required RO system records and coordinate with external service providers.
  • Create and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to water systems.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable environmental regulations, including RCRA, EPCRA, NPDES, SPCC, and SWPPP requirements.
  • Collect water samples and supervise laboratory testing throughout the treatment process.
  • Prepare and submit required environmental reports, including monthly, quarterly, semi‑annual, and annual submissions.
  • Conduct environmental audits and inspections, identify compliance gaps, and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop and manage hazardous and non‑hazardous waste programs in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate spill response drills and emergency preparedness activities.
Safety Leadership
  • Lead safety initiatives and integrate safety topics into management and team meetings.
  • Conduct safety inspections, behavioral observations, and monthly safety talks.
  • Review accident investigations, ensure corrective actions are implemented, and oversee resolution of safety violations.
  • Maintain and enforce safety policies, reporting procedures, and safe work practices.
Policy, Documentation & Training
  • Develop, write, and maintain SOPs for plant‑wide processes, including hazardous waste inspections, spill response, and spill kit management.
  • Provide training and technical support to operators and staff.
  • Contribute to the development of departmental and cross‑departmental policies.
  • Maintain inventory and authorize requisitions for materials and supplies.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Coordinate with internal departments to manage waste streams entering the wastewater system.
  • Ensure proper scheduling of waste haul‑off services and water truck pickups.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the role.
Education and Experience
  • Associate degree or two years of technical/business schooling, plus five years of experience as a Wastewater Treatment Operator; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certifications & Licenses
  • Class 1 Wastewater Treatment Operator certification (or equivalent).
  • Management training or coursework.
  • Ability to obtain required certifications within six months of hire.
