Responsibilities

The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) is a professional, registered nurse who provides operational and administrative support to Nurse leadership and collaborates with the Nurse Manager to execute the nursing strategic plan. The ANM coordinates staffing, supports throughput, quality and safety outcomes, staff competency, hiring, clinical and staff corrective actions, unit efficiency, and other departmental activities to support the mission, vision and values of Hackensack Meridian Health.

The ANM assesses, plans, implements, monitors and evaluates nursing practice and the care delivery system with direct supervision of front-line staff.

  • Leadership/Human Resource Management — In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, the ANM participates in recruitment and retention strategies, assists with unit huddles and leader rounding, participates in unit goal creation aligned with hospital goals and the organization’s mission and vision, and participates or leads evidence-based practice projects, shared governance committees, or councils as appropriate.
  • Resolves conflicts and facilitates constructive resolutions; completes employee corrective action plans/counseling as necessary.
  • Adheres to organizational competencies and standards of behavior; prepares and conducts periodic performance evaluations; contributes to unit orientation; promotes employee recognition; models cultural competence and diversity; escalates nursing labor/management issues where applicable.
  • Financial Management — Collaborates for efficient fiscal management, participates in payroll, staff scheduling, budgeting, and monitoring business intelligence; optimizes care efficiency, throughput, and patient/family experience; leads multidisciplinary rounds and drives unit-based performance improvement projects.
  • Leads or participates in quality improvement efforts and root cause analyses; ensures regulatory compliance and staff education/competency; mentors new employees and charge RNs; communicates policies and standards; serves as a role model for nursing professionalism and quality care.
  • Identifies opportunities for cost containment and alternative product utilization; participates in on-call and special projects as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by leadership and adheres to organizational competencies.
Qualifications

Education, Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Required

:

  • Minimum of an Associate Degree in Nursing or Diploma in Nursing.
  • BSN in progress and/or willing to acquire within three (3) years of hire (for team members hired on or after February 2025); advanced master's degrees satisfy the BSN requirement (e.g., ADN to MSN).
  • Minimum 3 years of recent nursing experience in the respective specialty or equivalent; internal candidates may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Ability to learn quickly, adapt to changing patient needs, strong accountability, teamwork, ongoing education, and commitment to high-quality patient care.

Skills and Abilities

Preferred

:

  • MSN
  • Supervisory or charge nurse experience

Licenses and Certifications Required
:

  • NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License
  • AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers
  • National Certification acceptable to the Magnet Recognition Program (within two years of hire)
Compensation and Benefits
