School Van Driver

4 hours per day (2 in the am and 2 in the pm)

$17.85 per hour

Will need to be Van certified

Qualifications
  • Valid driver's license with school van certification.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must meet requirements of the Ohio Department of Education and the district's Board Policy.
  • Completion of satisfactory van certification program.
  • Be physically qualified as determined by annual physical examination required by the State of Ohio.
  • Possess BCI and FBI clearances.
  • Professional tact, diplomacy and presentation with administrators, staff, teachers, students, parents and the community.
  • Conscientious and assumes responsibility for own work performance.
  • Good health, high moral character and good attendance record.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm and a sincere desire to aid all students.
General Description

Responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of school pupils within the guidelines of the State of Ohio and the policies established by the Board of Education, maintaining discipline on the van and promoting good public relations by neat appearance, proper attitude and suitable appearance of the school van.

Essential Functions
  • Complete a safety check of the school van as required by the State of Ohio Regulation  before each run.
    • Board the van at least fifteen (15) minutes before the scheduled morning departure and at least five (5) minutes before departing the parking area in the afternoon.
    • In cold weather, warm up the engine gradually. Do not race the engine. Be sure windshield, side windows and all mirrors are clear.
    • Complete established pre-trip inspection. Before starting on a scheduled bus route to pick up or discharge pupils, the driver shall check headlights, tail and stop lights, warning lights, directional lights, tires, horn, windshield wipers, heater and defroster, dashboard gauges, steering brakes or any other feature which may affect the safe, efficient operation of the vehicle.
    • Report equipment malfunctions on proper forms and give to the mechanics.
  • Responsible for safe operating condition and cleanliness of the bus.
  • Maintain pupil control and report any violation to the transportation supervisor according to procedure.
  • Maintain routes, stops and time schedules as established the supervisor. Make suggestions for more efficient routing but permission must be granted by transportation supervisor prior to any change.
  • Report any hazardous conditions along the existing route to the transportation supervisor.
  • Follow properly approved procedures for reporting bus/van accidents and complete forms provided.
  • Will be present or available at all van driver meetings and in the event of emergency dismissal.
  • Notify the transportation supervisor or designee in the case of illness daily or of continued illness so as to permit time to secure a substitute driver.
  • Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, conversation and the appearance of the school bus.
  • Share in the responsibility for driving for a school-sponsored event and/or approved field trip.
  • Shall conduct a minimum of three (3) emergency evacuation drills on each school van run each year.
  • Shall be required to attend one (1) annual inservice program.
  • Prepare reports, route maps, schedules, pupil lists and accident reports as required by the State of Ohio, Ohio Department of Education and the Board of Education.
  • Report equipment malfunctions in school dude.
  • Other Duties and Responsibilities
    • Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.
    • Help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
    • Conduct other duties related to the bus driver's duties as assigned by the transportation supervisor.
    Additional Working Conditions
    • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.
    • Occasional operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditions.
    • Occasional interaction among unruly children.

    The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District.
