Position: Fire Apparatus Technician I/II - Throughout Riverside

The County of Riverside Fire Department is seeking to fill multiple Fire Apparatus Technician I/II positions to support Perris and Indio Stations. Incumbents will perform major and minor mechanical and electrical repairs and adjustments on heavy‑duty gasoline and diesel‑powered fire apparatus and related equipment under field conditions, serve as mentors for Fire Apparatus Technician I’s and other shop personnel, and perform related work as required.

Fire

Apparatus Technician I
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical failures and defects in fire apparatus and other equipment.
  • Adjust, repair, replace, or overhaul a variety of diesel and automotive engines, transmissions, clutches, rear ends, differentials, transfer cases, hydraulic brake systems, axles, pumps, injectors, carburetors, final drives, sprockets, rollers, and truck and steering systems.
  • Maintain, diagnose, and repair electrical defects, including starting motors, generators, and ignition systems; repair and overhaul fire suppression components and related equipment.
  • Perform fabricating and repairing to alter or maintain Department equipment and trucks; complete routine maintenance such as oil changes and lubrication services; conduct CHP 90‑day compliance inspections and fire pump tests.
  • Complete time and material records.
Fire Apparatus Technician II
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical failures and defects in fire apparatus and other equipment in field conditions; diagnose, repair, and overhaul fire suppression and related equipment.
  • Mentor and train Fire Apparatus Technician I’s in the repair and overhaul of diesel and heavy‑duty gasoline engines, transmissions, clutches, rear ends, differentials, brake systems, carburetors, fire suppression equipment, and related components.
  • Perform maintenance, welding, alteration, and/or repair of automotive equipment as needed.
  • Perform routine maintenance including oil changes and lubrication services; conduct CHP 90‑day compliance inspections and fire pump tests.
Salary Range Fire Apparatus Technician I

$28.22 – $42.00 Hourly
$4,891 – $7,281 Monthly
$58,698 – $87,366 Annually

Fire Apparatus Technician II

$29.73 – $44.29 Hourly
$5,153 – $7,677 Monthly
$61,838 – $92,128 Annually

Experience (Fire Apparatus Technician I)

Completion of an accredited heavy equipment mechanic apprenticeship-training program or successful completion of the California Fire Mechanics Academy, Inc. Fire Mechanic I (Fire Pumps and Accessories) course of instruction. One year of successful experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic or Senior Heavy Equipment Mechanic with Riverside County, or an equivalent class in another jurisdiction, may substitute for apprenticeship or certification.

Knowledge (Fire Apparatus Technician I)

Principles of gasoline and diesel engines; heavy equipment maintenance and repair; methods, tools, equipment, and parts used in repair and maintenance of construction equipment; operation and application of mechanical diagnostic equipment.

Ability (Fire Apparatus Technician I)

Perform repair and maintenance work on heavy equipment; diagnose and repair mechanical defects in heavy‑duty gasoline and diesel construction equipment in both field and shop; operate equipment used in servicing construction equipment; read and understand shop manuals and mechanical diagrams; follow written and oral directions; work safely; work with minimal supervision.
