A Day in Life of a Roadway Project Engineer at HansonHere’s a snapshot of what you would do in this role:
- Perform roadway and transportation design for public-sector and private clients.
- Serve as roadway task lead on meaningful transportation infrastructure projects.
- As task lead coordinate with other disciplines, provide schedule input, and coordinate/review the work of others.
- Contribute to a growing list of projects including:
- Reconstruction of major urban thoroughfares and rural highways.
- Green infrastructure solutions, pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
- Complex intersections, bridge replacements, and rail grade crossings.
- Signing, pavement marking, and traffic control plans.
- Help direct, support, and mentor entry-level engineers and designers in roadway design.
- We utilize the latest Open Roads Designer (ORD) software and have a training program in place to assist users of all levels and an active software user group to tackle new challenges.
- Develop roadway design solutions for challenging transportation projects.
- Develop construction plans and contract documents.
- Author technical documents such as engineering reports and special provisions.
- Visit project sites to review existing conditions, identify potential challenges, and develop alternative solutions and recommendations.
- Work closely with experienced engineers who will guide and support you as you advance in your career.
- Prepare and review calculations, quantity takeoffs and opinions of probable cost.
- Participate in client meetings and proposal development.
- Provide occasional support of public involvement activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Occasional out-of-town travel for client meetings and site visits.

- Roadway design experience.
- Experience with roadway design software such as Open Roads Designer (preferred), Power Geopak, or Civil 3D.
- Interest in continued learning, professional growth, and expanding technical and leadership skills.
- Assist with quality control and adherence to roadway design standards.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is required.
- Typically 6+ years of professional engineering experience, including 2+ years focused on roadway design or transportation engineering.
- Illinois P.E. or the ability to reciprocate a license from another state within 6 months.
- Experience with IDOT, county, or municipal transportation projects is a plus.
Salary range: $95,000 – $160,000 per year. Salaries are based on years of experience, skillset, and qualifications. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
