OSF Health Care Childrens Hospital of Illinois (CHOI) is seeking a pediatric and congenital cardiac surgeon.

As a comprehensive Congenital Heart Center, our program at CHOI provides a full spectrum of pediatric cardiology services. Our Pediatric and Congenital Cardiac Surgeons treat a wide range of heart defects in all age groups from newborns to adults. Childrens Hospital of Illinois aims to establish a collaborative partnership with a leading qua ternary care institution to enhance clinical expertise, research capabilities and patient outcomes.
This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring effective coordination and communication between the two organizations, in addition to aligning cross organizational priorities.
Overview:
- Perform a full spectrum of pediatric cardiac surgical procedures including primary repairs of congenital heart defects, valve repair and replacement procedures, cardiac and vascular reconstructions, and complex neonatal cardiac operations.
- Provide pre-operative evaluation, surgical planning, intraoperative management, and post-operative care in collaboration with our multidisciplinary team.
- Participate in clinical rounds, cardiac case conferences, and care coordination meetings.
- Consistently deliver high-quality, evidence-based, and current state-of-the-art care.
- Collaborate with our pediatric ICU and critical care teams to optimize post operative recovery and long-term outcomes.
- Demonstrate positive working relationships and team-oriented interactions with staff physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, other departments, and other health care providers.
- Provide compassionate, high quality, patient-centered care.
- Support education and mentorship for fellows, residents, medical students, and staff.
- Contribute to research, program development, and clinical innovation to advance pediatric cardiac care.
Childrens Hospital of Illinois:
Located in Peoria, OSF Health Care Childrens Hospital of Illinois (CHOI) is the third largest childrens hospital in Illinois and the most comprehensive hospital for children in downstate Illinois. CHOI serves a population base of approximately 4.5 million, is a Level One trauma center and is the only pediatric hospital within the OSF Healthcare system. With 136 beds and more than 140 pediatric subspecialists, OSF Childrens Hospital cares for more children in Illinois than any hospital outside of Chicago.
Formally established as a pediatric hospital within the walls of OSF Health Care Saint Francis Medical Center in 1990, OSF Childrens Hospital of Illinois has more than 7,000 inpatient admissions, 75,000 outpatient specialty visits, 2,400 newborn deliveries, and 18,000 emergency department visits each year. OSF Saint Francis Medical Center has over 600 beds and over 800 physicians on staff and serves as the largest and most advanced tertiary and qua ternary care medical center in the region.
- Surgeon will join a well-established Congenital Heart Center with over 45 years of success in the region.
- Academic appointment is with the University of Illinois (UIC) college of medicine at Peoria and commensurate with academic achievements and teaching experience.
- Clinical and academic efforts supported by ten board certified pediatric cardiologists including specialists in electrophysiology, fetal, echocardiography, interventional catheterization, cardiac imaging, and adult congenital heart disease.
- Cardiac surgery is also supported by a team of pediatric critical care intensivists, including specialized pediatric cardiac intensivists.
- Additional supporting staff include advanced practice practitioners, dedicated pediatric perfusionists, pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists, and a dedicated surgical OR team.
- This program participates in both The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Congenital Heart Surgery Database and the World Database of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery.
- This program is an institutional member of the Congenital Heart Surgeons Society (CHSS)
- CHOI holds a Center of Excellence Gold Level Certification through the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) for ECMO services.
- Childrens Hospital of Illinois is investing in a new Pediatric Specialty Care Center ambulatory building, which will be home to the Congenital Heart Center.
- Our Congenital Heart Center is currently developing collaborative relationships with other regional congenital heart centers to further advance and develop our congenital heart program.
