Overview

The position of Assistant Athletic Trainer requires a commitment to the core values of Eastern Athletics and, in particular, plays a vital role in the physical and mental health and safety of our student-athletes. This position, reporting to the Director of Sports Medicine, will assist in the oversight of the intercollegiate athletic training services program for all student-athletes s position is responsible for ensuring that departmental efforts, especially those under the purview of the Assistant Athletic Trainer position description, support the mission of the University and are in compliance with all NCAA, MAC, and University rules and regulations.

The Assistant Athletic Trainer is accountable for modeling a positive, professional demeanor as is inherent in higher education and athletics, as well as for mentoring student-athletes with an emphasis in Christian formation.

This is a full-time, 12-month, support staff position within the Department of Athletics.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in providing all athletic training medical needs and related services for all intercollegiate student-athletes. These needs include preventative, primary, and secondary care.
  • Assist in making the proper referrals to team physicians, school physicians, and school health center (nurse) as requested or appropriate and maintain open communication as per FERPA and HIPAA guidelines as necessary.
  • Assist in maintaining appropriate medical records for school and private health insurance carriers as mandated by state law and under the direction of the Director of Sports Medicine.
  • Serve as a liaison between athletic administration, coaching staff, school health personnel, and the student-athlete’s family.
  • Assist in providing appropriate athletic training equipment and supplies to each intercollegiate athletic team.
  • Assist in daily athletic training services and coverage for all home intercollegiate athletic contests and practices.
  • Assist in the coordination of all non-traditional season, preseason, and in-season conditioning programs with the strength and conditioning coordinator as well as sport specific coaches.
  • Assist in the inventory, ordering, upkeep, and purchasing of supplies and equipment for the athletic training services program.
  • Assist the Director of Sports Medicine in efforts to secure external funding for the athletic training services program as well as take active role in department-wide fundraising efforts.
  • Assist in providing appropriate in-service training to all coaches, athletic staff and administration, and athletic training students as assigned by the Director of Sports Medicine.
  • Assist in providing pre-participation physicals and screenings on all student-athletes yearly.
  • Review and provide input on medical emergency plans for all athletic fields and facilities.
  • Attend continuing education programs as required by the appropriate governing national professional organizations.
  • Attend all department meetings; attend MAC meetings when appropriate or necessary.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine, Athletic Training, or closely related field is required.
  • Master’s degree is preferred.
  • NATABOC Certified as an ATC is required, as is appropriate state licensure.
  • First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer is also required, with Instructor certification preferred.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, a positive mindset, the ability to multi-task, and attention to detail are essential.
  • The ability, and desire, to work successfully within a team-oriented department environment is required.
  • A commitment to the Division III philosophy of athletics and a working knowledge of NCAA rules is needed.
  • Candidates must exhibit an understanding of, and support for, the University’s Christian Mission.
  • Additional qualifications include excellent interpersonal and an ability to effectively communicate the mission and vision of Eastern University and the Athletic Department to alumni and friends of the university.
Status

Staff, full-time regular, exempt, 40 hrs per week, 12 months per year.
