Job Responsibilities
- Perform structural layout and positioning of steel components on large weldments, based on engineering‑supplied DWGs.
- Use rigging/millwright skills to safely handle and flip large weldments in the shop using jib and bridge cranes.
- Coordinate fitment of items on other structural weldments from other departments.
- Apply correct layout tools (squares, tape measures, lasers, string lines, torpedo levels, combination levels, angle finders, etc.) to achieve square and level.
- Use accurate math daily to assure weldment items are in the correct position, square, and level.
- Perform MIG welding of various wire thicknesses; use specialized wires (e.g., hard facing) and pass internal weld tests; execute multi‑pass welds per company standards.
- Maintain strong communication skills in a loud shop environment; follow instructions from leads and supervisors; act as a team player with safety as the top priority.
- Complete tasks within the estimated fabrication estimate, monitoring hours applied to each project and justifying time spent on weldments.
- Identify acceptable and sub‑standard welds per Mellott Standards; repair any sub‑par welds before QA inspections.
- Participate in safety toolbox meetings; assist manager/foreman/superintendent as directed.
- Operate forklifts, telehandlers, manlifts, overhead cranes, metal saws, press brakes, iron workers, etc.
- Display competency with reading measuring tools (tape, scale, angle finder, protractor, square) to 1/16" or 1 mm as drawings require.
- Operate basic rigging principals and techniques; work out‑of‑town for up to two weeks at a time as required.
- Comfortably work off hours or overtime to complete projects.
- Minimum of 5+ years performing structural layout and positioning of steel weldments.
- 5+ years rigging/millwright background for safe handling of large weldments.
- Proficiency with a wide array of layout tools and precise measurement.
- Excellent mathematical skills for accurate positioning.
- 5+ years MIG welding experience with a variety of wire thicknesses; ability to perform multi‑pass welds.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills; safety‑first mindset.
- Knowledge of welding standards (Mellott, company standards).
- High school diploma or GED.
- AWS D1.1 welding certification or ability to obtain it through testing.
- Willingness to travel to customer facilities and work off‑campus for as required.
- Prior experience with forklift, telehandler, overhead crane, metal saw, and press brake operation.
- Basic first aid training is an advantage.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Willingness to pursue apprenticeship or other job‑skills training offered by the company.
- Completion of basic first aid training.
- Knowledge, skills, and attributes: safety participation, teamwork, layout competence, measuring proficiency, welding proficiency, readability of specifications, rigging training.
- Willingness to work off‑campus or in customers’ facilities as required.

- Ability to travel up to two weeks at a time.
- Pass a pre‑employment drug screen and pre‑employment physical.
Work takes place in a climate‑controlled shop with high noise levels. The individual may be exposed to hot or cold temperatures, fumes, or chemicals. Personal protective equipment such as safety glasses and steel‑toe boots are required on the shop floor.
