Job SummaryThis is a seasonal position for an anticipated duration of 90 days.
The Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking dedicated, compassionate, and exceptional Registered Nurses to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals. The Registered Nurse II assesses patients’ health care needs and ensures their needs are met. All interactions are person‑centered, using a person‑first approach with safety as the number one priority while acknowledging the dignity of risk. The role includes preparation, administration, and documentation of patient medications and treatments.
The RN works as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team and assumes responsibility for nursing care on the inpatient unit, maintaining patient and nursing records, following all standards and practices of nursing, including DMH facility and nursing policies. The RN accepts responsibilities and assures patient safety while supervising staff.
Full‑time, 40 hours per week. Work schedule varies with evening and night shifts available. Seasonal positions do not offer employee benefits except sick time accruals. Employees in this position will be required to work mandatory overtime.
Duties and Responsibilities- Transcribes all physicians’ orders and administers medications and treatments to aid in patient rehabilitation.
- Completes admission assessment and initial nursing care plan based on health and safety issues by the end of the shift.
- Provides primary nursing care to an assigned group of patients using the nursing process and following current standards of care.
- Serves as a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team, acting as a resource person regarding patient health issues.
- Manages and supervises the nursing staff in the absence of a higher‑grade registered nurse.
- As charge nurse or primary nurse, meets patient nursing care needs and communicates key patient information to appropriate staff to ensure coordination and continuity of care.
- Participates in admission, discharge, and transfer of patients to facilitate smooth transitions.
- Acts as leader or co‑leader of patient treatment groups.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of nursing.
- Knowledge of nursing terminology and standard abbreviations.
- Knowledge of challenges in providing nursing services to special client groups such as the mentally, physically, and/or emotionally handicapped.
- Knowledge of standard nursing policies, procedures, methods, and techniques.
- Certification as a Psychiatric Nurse by the American Nurse Association.
A criminal background check will be completed on the recommended candidate as required by the regulations set forth by the Executive Office of Health and Human Services prior to hiring. Education, licensure, and certifications will be verified in accordance with the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines.
