Luxfer MEL Technologies’ Saxonburg, PA facility manufactures magnesium powder by processing magnesium ingots into fine, engineered materials. These powders are supplied to customers in industries such as aerospace, defense, automotive, and other advanced technology markets. Our operations include the handling of both hazardous and non-hazardous materials and require strict adherence to safety, quality, and compliance standards.
Job OverviewBased in our Saxonburg, PA facility you will work for Luxfer MEL Technologies as part of the Quality Department, reporting to the Quality Manager USA. The main purpose of the role is to perform – in a timely manner and with a high degree of accuracy and precision – a wide range of analytical tests on both In-Process and Final Product material against defined specifications to meet the needs of both our internal and external customers.
You will be responsible for ensuring that day‑to‑day, medium and long term objectives within the US function are met, using Key Performance Indicators such as those reported in the Departmental Scorecard to measure the effectiveness of actions taken to deliver Continuous Improvements beneficial to the business in key areas such as Safety, Customer First and Growth.
What You’ll Do Main Responsibilities- Ensure compliance to all Environmental, Health and Safety policies, laws and regulations as they apply to laboratory function and operation. Conduct precise and accurate routine analytical testing on Incoming Raw Materials, In-Process Control samples and Final Product samples of Magnesium materials following a wide range of established standard operating procedures and involving both the use of traditional wet chemistry techniques and the use of a wide variety of analytical instrumentation (including, but not limited to, ICP‑OES, Particle Size by laser diffraction and sieving).
- Compare analytical test results against established international and industry specific standards to ensure proper quality controls are upheld and promptly enter data into the appropriate computer systems and, where necessary, communicate this data to the appropriate Production, Quality Assurance and Quality Control personnel.
- Maintain a high standard of laboratory operating conditions regarding equipment, validity of calibration standards, housekeeping, analytical records, etc. by adhering to established standards.
- Be actively involved as part of the team in ensuring that the Department meets all its key objectives as measured by its Key Performance Indicators. Participate in – and lead – Continuous Improvement Initiatives (such as Method Development, 5S and Lean Manufacturing Workflow Exercises) which support the LUXFER core values of Customer First, Integrity, Accountability, Innovation, Personal Development and Teamwork.
- Be responsible for organizing your own workload based on agreed priorities and deadlines and understand that predictable attendance is critical to accomplishing essential tasks.
- Perform preventative maintenance on analytical instrumentation and effectively troubleshoot equipment performance issues.
- Ensure that you deal with all relevant queries from Internal and External Customers in a timely manner and with a high degree of professionalism.
- Be available to facilitate reasonable requests to work outside your normal working hours and agreed days according to business needs.
- Work closely with colleagues that are based at different Luxfer sites in both the US and UK (both within the Materials QC Team and all other departments) which will sometimes involve travelling to these sites.

- Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or related discipline is required
- Master’s Degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or related discipline is desirable
- At least 2 years Laboratory, lab‑related or chemical manufacturing experience
- Experience in metal analysis and traditional wet chemistry techniques
- Experience using inorganic analytical instrumentation such as ICP‑OES, Spark‑OES, UV‑Visible spectrometers and Particle Size equipment
