Join the Mountain Club of Maryland for a rewarding day of work on the Appalachian Trail on Friday, March 20 from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm!
Volunteers will be clearing trees that have fallen on the Appalachian Trail throughout the 9-mile section of the Trail across Cove Mountain. This work is important to get the Trail ready for the spring and summer hiking season! No experience needed - training provided.
On this work trip, there will be multiple certified chainsaw operators (sawyers) who need assistants (swampers) who can carry supplies and act as safety lookout during operations. The sawyer and swampers will work as independent crews and leapfrog from one blowdown to the next so we're not bunching up with chainsaws. Historically, there are between 20 and 30 blowdowns in that section and, this year, we expect more than usual.
Bring lunch, snacks, water, good hiking footwear and clothing appropriate for the weather that day.
Volunteers will meet in Maryville, PA at 8:00 am and will be on the Trail by 8:30 am. Exact meeting location will be shared after registration.
