JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction and supervision of qualified professional registered nurses, and in accordance with established procedures and aseptic principles, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for the set-up and maintenance of the surgical field and will assist the surgeon during operative procedures. Possesses the ability to scrub all cases in all services and demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation, their uses, and accurate methods of sterilization and maintains an aseptic controlled environment.

Assists in processes to streamline care, reduce inefficiency, improve quality, and reduce costs. Supports the philosophy and goals of OSS Orthopaedic Hospital.

SCHEDULE:

Same location, 4 - 10hr shifts a week 6:30am - 5:00pm. Rotating Saturdays. No call or holidays.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists with preparation and cleaning of surgical suite as directed by the circulating nurse.
  • Sets up and maintains the sterile surgical field.
  • Assists the surgeon by passing instruments during operations.
  • Performs sponge, needle and instrument count.
  • Anticipates needs of operative team and delivers necessary instruments and supplies quickly and efficiently.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of accurate methods of sterilization and maintains an aseptic controlled environment.
  • Transports patients and assists with transferring patients from stretcher to table and vice versa.
  • Assists with lifting and positioning patient.
  • Report unusual occurrences to the manager
  • Contributes to the efficient and productive operation of the Operating Room.
  • Level II:
  • May assist with training and/or mentoring newly hired staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent required.

EXPERIENCE/

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist required.
  • BLS certification required or an ability to obtain within (1) year.
  • Previous work experience in a Perioperative area as a surgical technologist:
    • Surgical Tech I – prior experience as a surgical tech strongly preferred.
    • Surgical Tech II – at least (3) years of experience as a surgical tech required.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently make use of time and resources.
  • Must be able to plan and organize work.
  • Must have proficient computer skills.
  • Must have professional and effective communication skills and be able to promote effective communication at all levels.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology required.
