Responsibilities

Has ultimate administrative responsibility for clinical standards and practice regardless of the practice area or reporting relationship. Directs hospital patient care activities within context of hospital policies and procedures:

  • Ensures continuous and timely clinical services to patients.
  • Ensures patient care standards, practices, policies and procedures, in accordance with all applicable laws, regulatory and accreditation requirements are consistent with current research findings and national professional standards.
  • Directs patient care service Performance Improvement activities.
  • Actively participates in hospital leadership functions.
  • collaborates with hospital leaders to design and provide patient care and services, including availability of sufficient, qualified staff.
  • Develops, presents and manages budget for assigned services.
  • Assumes line responsibility and authority for the administrative direction, evaluation, and coordination of the functions and activities of assigned departments within the hospital, ensuring that operation objectives and results are in accord with the hospital’s overall needs.
  • In the absence of the hospital CEO, will represent the CEO in coordinating entire portions of the hospital’s organization, speaking and acting within the scope of objectives set forth in the practice and/or policy of the hospital.

General Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements overall patient care plan consistent with hospital policies and objectives, to provide continuous care and services.
  • Develops, implements and interprets nursing and patient care policies, objectives and standards for measurement and maintenance of quality care.
  • Develops, implements and administers budget and expense control system.
  • Organizes, directs and supervises daily nursing service to assure adequate hospital coverage and quality care.
  • Recruits, interviews, evaluate sand hires qualified personnel to meet patient’s needs.
  • Participates in the development,implementation and maintenance of the hospital quality assurance and improvement program through evaluation of services rendered, quality improvement, audit of medical records, patient visits and counsel with hospital staff.
  • Maintains communications with medical and administrative staff through participation in regularly scheduled staff meeting and involvement on hospital medical services committees.
  • Evaluates long and short-range equipment and supply requirements for patient care by forecasting service levels and quantity of materials on hand.
  • Directs, plans and implements orientation and educational programs to promote staff training and development.
  • Recommends and participates in development of new patient care programs for expansion of patient care services.
  • Represents hospital in healthcare programs and professional organizations of associates to serve in apublic relations capacity and to stimulate professional growth.
  • Provides administrative direction for operations of assigned departments and appraises the performance of the respective departments’ heads, including authority to hire and fire, but subject to the veto of the CEO.
  • Communicates routinely with the CEO concerning policy recommendations and suggested courses of action pertinent to the efficient operation of assigned departments.
  • Implements new policies; disseminates pertinent information following administrative directives; and recommends improvement of hospital facilities in assigned areas, including construction or renovation of structures and purchase ofnew equipment.
  • Advises and makes recommendations to the CEO concerning budget, cost, and financial matters and encourages and assists department heads in establishing a measure of performance, increased productivity, quality improvement, cost controls, and maximum utilization of facilities.
  • Attends medical staff meetings and/or medical staff committee meetings, as assigned or requested, and informs the CEO of proceedings at the meetings attended and recommends action as necessary.
