Basic Qualifications

Overview: We are seeking an innovative and detail-oriented Design Engineer to support the development, improvement, and customization of products that meet customer and operational requirements. This role is responsible for creating detailed 3D models, engineering drawings, and technical documentation using CAD software, while ensuring designs meet quality, manufacturability, and safety standards. The Design Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams, including Production, Procurement, and Quality, to bring designs from concept through production.

Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in mechanical design engineering, preferably in a manufacturing environment
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Solid Works preferred) and familiarity with PDM/PLM systems
  • Hands-on experience with product development, prototyping, and engineering change processes

Knowledge:

  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials selection, and manufacturing processes (fabrication, machining, assembly)
  • Familiarity with engineering standards, tolerances, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
  • Knowledge of product lifecycle management and documentation control processes

Skills:

  • Proficient in Solid Works or equivalent 3D modeling software
  • Skilled in creating accurate engineering drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation
  • Capable of analyzing designs for manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and performance

Interpersonal:

  • Strong communication skills for collaboration with cross-functional teams and external suppliers
  • Ability to manage multiple design projects under tight deadlines
  • Proactive, adaptable, and solution-oriented approach to problem-solving

General Responsibilities

The Design Engineer is responsible for developing product designs, engineering documentation, and technical solutions that meet customer requirements, manufacturing capabilities, and company standards. This includes creating and maintaining CAD models and drawings, supporting engineering change processes, collaborating with other departments to resolve design issues, and contributing to product innovation and continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Duties

  • Develop detailed 3D models, engineering drawings, and BOMs for new and existing products
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Production, Procurement, and Quality to ensure design feasibility and manufacturability
  • Apply GD&T and appropriate tolerances to all designs in compliance with industry standards
  • Participate in product development from concept through production release
  • Review and process Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)
  • Conduct design reviews and provide technical input to improve performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness
  • Support prototype builds and testing to validate designs against specifications and requirements
  • Maintain accurate and organized design files in PDM/PLM systems
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing teams during product launch and production

General Duties

  • Participate with Engineering leadership in setting departmental design and development goals
  • Abide by organizational policies and contribute to a respectful, compliant workplace
  • Support internal policies for risk management, safety, and regulatory compliance

Equipment/Machines

  • PC, CAD software (Solid Works), PDM/PLM systems, standard office equipment

Engineer1 – Ability to create product tanks, small parts, bumpers. Utilize Lunch Box sessions and complete tests provided following each section.

Complete National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) training.

Engineer2 – All Engineer1 requirements completed. Product engineer: ability to create a flatbed or mechanics truck start to finish. Proficient on road water products. Electrical engineer: proficient in Curry product line with electrical design, expertise and experience. Rail engineer: proficient in rail design/engineering and cross trained in other product lines.

Can work with minimal supervision and interact with shop floor employees to develop better drawings and understand changes to benefit the manufacturing process.

Engineer3 – All Engineer1 and 2 requirements completed unless sufficient previous work experience in a related field. Mastery of all Curry products but not limited to off road, fuel lubes and custom builds and cross trained in electrical or rail specialties. Can work independently and utilize project management skills.

Can assist in training the engineering team. Understanding of bill of materials, parts and project lead times. Can interact with sales team and customers as well as purchasing and department managers.
