In this role, you will be tasked with a variety of technical responsibilities focused on inspecting materials and workmanship for highway construction projects within Engineering District 9-0. Your duties will include ensuring compliance with construction codes, plans, standards, and specifications throughout all phases of transportation construction. You will collaborate with contractors and surveyors to verify grades, elevations, and the layout of structures and roadways.
Additionally, you will evaluate the placement of materials such as cement concrete, bituminous concrete, and drainage systems, while conducting compaction tests on sub‑surface strata, soils, and aggregates using visual non‑movement techniques.
This position also requires close cooperation with Department staff, as well as federal, state, and local agencies, legislators, and the public to facilitate effective project management. You will maintain detailed project documentation, including master diary entries, calculations, item quantity estimates, and cost assessments, while addressing any field issues that arise. Furthermore, you will compile photographic evidence, prepare or review sketches, and create inspection review summaries to support comprehensive project oversight.

Work Schedule and Additional Information- Full‑time employment
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch.
- You will work closely with vendors and work hours may change based on vendor availability.

Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907 (before taxes). - You will receive further communication regarding this position via email. - Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
- Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
- One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (commonwealth titles); or
- One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate's degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
- This position requires possession of an active non‑commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
