The Shipley School seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Director of Jazz and Music Theory to work with our existing Music Department. This is a long-term sub position within the Music department reporting to the Head of Upper School.
The Shipley Music Department encourages all students to take risks in pursuit of excellence. Through creative exploration, students develop the courage to approach a musical goal and the grace to achieve it through hard work and perseverance. Our PreK-12 curriculum promotes active music making and strong music literacy skills, which help to cultivate a lifelong love of music.
Key Responsibilities:- Teach one Upper School course in Advanced Music Composition and Production, and one in Jazz Improvisation.
- Lead and conduct small and large Jazz ensembles in rehearsals and performances.
- Arrange and program appropriate repertoire for ensembles as needed.
- Manage and maintain equipment used in all classes and rehearsals.
- Lead one before school rehearsal each week from 7:15-8:00 a.m.
- Fulfill the duties of Upper School Advisor in coordination with class deans.
- Work collaboratively with other music department colleagues to develop performance opportunities and curriculum.
- Co-teach a sectional of Lower and Middle School bands in coordination with the music director.
- Provide positive, frequent communication with colleagues, administration and families.
- Attend and perform at school-related functions.
- A minimum of BM, BME or comparable credentials in music education and/or performance.
- Previous teaching experience of students in grades 4-12.
- Previous experience in leading or performing with both Jazz Big Band and small Jazz Combinations.
- Ability to play or demonstrate on instrument(s) common to jazz band, orchestra, and/or concert band.
- Experience using music production and notation software, such as Sibelius and Garage Band.
- Piano skills preferred.
The qualified candidate will also have the option of joining our private lesson faculty. Any monies earned in this capacity would be in addition to the full-time, temporary position.
