Mechanical Engineering Team Lead – Building Engineering Services Team, Pennington, New Jersey. This individual will be administratively responsible for the group as well as technical service functions, lead and coordinate services with other disciplines, and be directly involved with clients in project production and related issues. They will assist the Mechanical Section Manager in implementing, monitoring, and supporting company policy, train, develop, and manage technical personnel, and help identify and recruit talented staff to enable our mechanical section to grow to meet the design needs of HDR’s East Region.
They will also coordinate workload between the Mechanical subgroups in NJ and the BES teams in the NY/NJ area, and foster cross‑training and professional development opportunities.
- Manage a design production team to deliver HVAC and plumbing work through recruitment, staff development, and training.
- Manage workflow and utilization, mentor staff, forecast and schedule, maintain quality control, and foster a team environment.
- Act as a technical lead on projects, coordinate with other disciplines across HDR, and lead the development of construction drawings, specifications, and supporting engineering calculations, including reviewing shop drawings during construction.
- Engage directly with external clients as well as internal project managers, market sector leads, business group managers, and other HDR leaders.
- Help implement, monitor, and support company policies, especially as delegated by the Mechanical Section Manager.
- Participate in leadership for technical service functions and support the development of HDR services in technical design.
- Assist in the preparation of mechanical proposals, including scope development and estimating hours/fees, under the supervision of the Mechanical Section Manager.
- Provide technical expertise in HVAC and plumbing design across a variety of markets, including Healthcare, Education & Science, Data Centers, Water/Wastewater, Municipal, Industrial, and Federal clients.

- Master’s degree with a focus in Mechanical Engineering.
- 15 years of experience in mechanical design.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical/HVAC design of buildings and facilities.
- Technical knowledge of mechanical systems design.
- Excellent planning skills.
- Ability to thrive in a team environment.
- Ability to manage, lead and mentor other team members.
- Experience directly supervising multiple staff members.
- Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm.
