Research Project Description

The main research areas focus on medium- to long-term analyses of changes in the social composition of cities, with particular attention to residential segregation dynamics, housing prices, real estate markets, welfare systems, environmental factors, and mobility flow dynamics. The preferred approaches are transdisciplinary, combining sociology, urban studies, statistics, demography, economic geography, and computer engineering. The department provides a supportive environment for the development of innovative, data-driven and theoretically grounded research projects, and actively encourages MSCA applicants to propose original research ideas aligned with these themes.

Research

Group

The Department of Political and International Sciences is a transdisciplinary environment of excellence in research and teaching at the University of Genoa.

The researcher will be integrated into the DIAMETROIT research group (), coordinated by Prof. Niccolò Morelli, recipient of a FIS2 Starting Grant awarded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research in 2024, with a total budget of €1.3 million.

The research group consists of six members with expertise ranging from general and urban sociology to social statistics and demography. Its core research focuses on the analysis of the social composition of Italian Functional Urban Areas from 1991 to the present, using census data integrated with additional data sources.

By employing urban grid–based approaches, the group is currently laying the foundations for fine-grained international comparisons of cities. The department is therefore interested in research projects that can contribute to advancing international comparative urban research, with particular attention to Functional Urban Areas and high spatial resolution analyses aimed at investigating neighbourhood effects.
