Description – Call for Expression of Interest for a Joint Application under the Upcoming Call for MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026

University of Genoa welcomes postdoctoral researchers of any nationality, with an excellent track record, to apply to the European Commission Marie Skłodowska‑Curie (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026. Our University has been a beneficiary of several MSCA‑PF in Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe.

The Marie Skłodowska Curie (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowship is one of the funding schemes of the European Commission’s Horizon Europe Research & Innovation programme, dedicated to excellent research promoting international mobility, as well as interdisciplinary and intersect oral exchanges.

MSCA fellowship grant provides a competitive salary plus mobility and family allowances if applicable, as well as a contribution to cover research, training and networking costs. The research projects will have 2‑ or 3‑year duration.

Selected candidates will receive special support for proposal writing and development
.

Unige will organize in May the fifth edition of the Masterclass MSCA@Uni Ge
. Selected candidate researchers will have the opportunity to attend a 2‑days online intensive training and coaching course on how to write a successful proposal
. This masterclass is a pathway of support to candidates and their supervisors in preparing project proposals, including prescreening activity of the draft proposals and the organisation of dedicated B2B meetings by the European Research Office of Unige, National Contact Point and other experts.

The masterclass will take place in Spring 2026

Research Project Description

Recent developments in materials and fabrication technologies may substantially improve both shipbuilding processes and products, i.e. ships performances in terms of efficiency, safety and environmental protection. However, the shipbuilding industry, especially in Europe, experiences difficulties in exploiting currently available materials and production approaches for a number of reasons.

Knowledge gaps need advice on how to improve design, rule requirements and qualification as well as approval processes, shipyard procedures and quality control in order to keep pace with upcoming innovations. Challenges from new materials, advanced fabrication processes and, above all, increased digitalisation need an effort that shipbuilders and shipowners are reluctant to offer.

In this context, the candidate may have the chance to deepen his/her expertise and skill studying new shipbuilding materials and fabrication technologies, with emphasis on joining techniques. Digital and robotic inspections for quality control may also be a topic of interest.

Research Group

Since 1964 the Marine Structures Testing Laboratory of the University of Genova allows the implementation of tests and sea trials on full and large‑scale specimens of ships and offshore structures as well as related theoretical and numerical studies. It was originally established to solve the large number of problems of shipbuilding: it is indeed possible to design and perform unconventional testing, not yet defined in current practice, as well as to select the most adequate instrumentation and equipment, to draft testing specifications according to the goals of the research and to critically analyse the measured data in a parallel approach merging experimental and theoretical design and analysis of ship structures.

Academics work in strict cooperation with the shipbuilding industry to fill the gaps between research and production, having established since decades a fruitful pipeline to exploit acquired knowledge also in teaching and training activities.

A partnership agreement is established since a few years with the Italian Welding Institute laboratory.

Application Details
