Research Project Description

SAFE – Social action for Faith and Education. Interfaith Dialogue as a Tool for Inclusion, Active Citizenship and Democracy in European Schools responds to growing challenges of discrimination, marginalisation and declining civic participation among European youth, particularly those with migrant or refugee backgrounds, religious minorities, and LGBTQI+ students. The project aims to harness interfaith dialogue as a pedagogical and civic tool to foster mental wellbeing, strengthen social cohesion, and promote active citizenship and democracy.

SAFE combines comparative legal-historical research with participatory co-creation of curricula, digital resources and interactive simulations. It pilots inclusive interventions in schools and communities across six countries, involving students, teachers, families and civil society organisations. Activities include classroom dialogues, teacher training, community workshops, and stakeholder round tables. Evaluation will measure impacts on youth resilience, educator capacity and civic participation.

  • Comparative legal-policy mapping and school survey datasets.
  • Inclusive curricula and a digital toolkit validated in diverse classroom contexts.
  • Evidence-based evaluations of mental health, inclusion and civic engagement outcomes.
  • A policy playbook with concrete guidelines for schools, municipalities and ministries.
  • By directly linking education, interfaith dialogue and civic participation, SAFE addresses Horizon Europe’s objectives under CL2. It provides scalable, transferable and ethically robust solutions to improve wellbeing, inclusion and democracy, bridging the gap between research, practice and policy.
