We believe that every child and young person deserves the best possible start in life. Our aim is for Edinburgh’s children to be safe, healthy, nurtured, educated, active and respected.

Our children’s practice teams are at the forefront of providing services to help children, young people and their families deal with difficult situations at various stages in their lives: whether in need of child protection; looked after at or away from home; or at risk of becoming excluded from school or becoming looked after.

This is an exciting time to join Edinburgh. We are implementing a new service structure to ensure Edinburgh is at the forefront of social work practice. We are moving our case management platform to Mosaic, which will mean that our social workers have an effective and efficient case management system, saving time and reducing administration, all with the aim of providing our social workers with more time to see children and work alongside families to bring about positive change.

We are also exploring how we can incorporate AI tools into our work.

Induction & Support

Whether you are newly qualified or experienced, all new social workers will receive a personalised induction process, a named mentor, access to a wide range of learning and development opportunities and regular supervision from a Team Leader.

For newly qualified workers we will support you through your Newly Qualified Social Worker (NQSW) Supported Year with a restricted caseload, supervision every 1-2 weeks and tailored support and developmental opportunities. Further opportunities will be available to help you advance in your career with us.

For experienced workers we offer opportunities to use your skills and experience to support great practice with chances for career development and advancement. Caseloads within Edinburgh are set at a maximum number to ensure that social workers have the time to do their jobs well. Our practice is supported by Practice Standards which provide clarity on expectations to ensure the best service for children, young people and families.

Additional Information

We’re committed to creating a workplace culture where all our people feel valued, included and able to be their best at work, and we recognise the benefits that a diverse workforce with different values, beliefs, experience, and backgrounds brings to us as an organisation.

As part of our goal to improve our organisational culture and create a great place to work together for the people of Edinburgh, we want to make sure that we’re bringing the best people into our roles, not just in their skills and experience but also in their approach to work.

We’re changing the way we interview and assess candidates by moving from a competency-based interview approach to a behavioural and technical (skills for the job) based approach. This new way of interviewing will allow us to assess how you think and how you would bring Our Behaviours of Respect, Integrity and Flexibility into your ways of working.

You can find out more on Our Behaviours web page Our Behaviours – The City of Edinburgh Council

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.
