Recreation Supervisor-Parks & Recreation Aquatic/Ice Rink
The City of Pendleton, Oregon is seeking passionate, high energy, Aquatics professional to serve as a Recreation Supervisor. The primary role of the position is the management of the Pendleton Family Aquatic Center and the Roy Raley Ice Skating Rink. The Pendleton Parks and Recreation Department functions as a cohesive team. The Recreation Supervisor will be expected to help out with other department priorities which will be established after hire based on the successful candidate’s individual skill set.
Examples include, managing special events, youth or adult sports leagues, or special projects. The ideal candidate will be someone who has a talent for both administrative duties, and rolling up their sleeves and getting the job done.
The Pendleton Family Aquatic Center is a large outdoor aquatic center spanning over 3.5 acres, with 3 pools, water slides, diving boards, splash features, and a concession stand. The facility teaches hundreds of swimming lessons each year, and partners with the Pendleton Swim Association to provide competitive swimming options for local swimmers. The ideal candidate will possess a solid foundation in the management of an aquatic facility, aquatic programming, and cost recovery.
The right candidate will be able to manage the competing priorities of public open swim, swimming lessons, competitive swimming activities, and private rentals.
Approximately 30% of the cost of operating the facility is covered by General Fund subsidy, and the rest must be recovered from user fees, concession sales, grants and donations. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the financial challenges and cost recovery strategies involved with running a public facility.
The Pendleton Family Aquatic Center hires over 70 seasonal employees including lifeguards, admission and concessions, and swim instructors. For many of these employees it is their first job, and they are inexperienced. The ideal candidate will have a strong talent for personnel management, mentorship, and employee development. Due to the large number of lifeguards hired each year, the ideal candidate will hold a Lifeguard Instructor Certification or have the ability to get the certification within 6 months of hire.
The Recreation Supervisor is responsible for the overall operation of the large aquatic facility, coordinating the work of maintenance staff and contractors. The ideal candidate will be a Certified Pool Operator or have the ability to achieve this certification within 6 months of hire.
About the Roy Raley Ice RinkThe Roy Raley Ice Rink is a seasonal outdoor Ice-Skating Rink, offers public open skating, and works with the Pendleton Ice Sports Booster Club to provide competitive and recreational hockey opportunities to the community. The ideal candidate will be skilled at balancing the priorities of the general public, team sports, and private rentals.
The Rink employs a small number of seasonal workers for admissions and concessions who will be directly supervised by the Recreation Supervisor.
About the DepartmentPendleton boasts a large Park and Recreation Department for a town its size, managing 22 parks, roughly 17 landscaped areas, municipal aquatic center, recreation center, ice skating rink, and City Cemetery. The department swells to well over 100 employees in the middle of summer. The department has 4 supervisory level positions:
The Parks and Recreation Director, Parks Supervisor, and two Recreation Supervisors. One Recreation Supervisor has traditionally managed the recreation center, after school program, summer camp programs, and youth sports offerings, with the other traditionally managing the aquatic center, ice rink, and adult sports leagues. These responsibilities are not set in stone, and may change as the department evolves to meet the needs of the community.
