Distribution Engineer
Job DescriptionWe are seeking a Distribution Engineer to support power distribution projects servicing the Birmingham area and the Eastern Division. A Distribution Engineer designs, plans, and manages electrical distribution systems that deliver electricity to homes, businesses, and industries, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient power delivery. This role is integral to ongoing capital upgrades and grid modernization programs aimed at improving reliability and efficiency across the utility footprint.
Projects- Automation initiatives
- Joint Use/Share Services support
- KV conversions and strengthening of tie lines
- Establishing power distribution for new businesses and facilities
- System Design & Planning: Design and optimize overhead and underground distribution systems, including substations, transformers, and protective devices, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Network Analysis: Perform load flow, fault analysis, and voltage drop calculations to assess system performance and identify improvements.
- Asset Management: Maintain accurate equipment records, assess conditions, and recommend maintenance or replacement strategies.
- Equipment Selection: Specify and select transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and other components based on voltage and load requirements.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure adherence to safety protocols, environmental regulations, and industry codes; collaborate with regulatory authorities for approvals.
- Reliability Improvement: Implement strategies to enhance system resilience, reduce downtime, and improve power quality.
- New Connections: Evaluate and design infrastructure for new customer connections and delivery growth.
- Project Management: Oversee projects from conception to completion, coordinating with contractors, vendors, and internal teams to meet timelines and budgets.
- Emergency Response: Support outage restoration and equipment failure resolution through rapid assessment and corrective action.
- Data Analysis: Utilize smart grid data and monitoring systems for performance insights and data-driven decisions.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering discipline (Electrical or Mechanical preferred)
- Proficiency in distribution design software, CAD tools, and power system simulation; familiarity with AutoCAD and GIS is a plus.
- Demonstrated expertise in Power Utility Distribution Services, including overhead and underground systems.
- Strong understanding of electrical distribution principles, grid operations, protection systems, and regulatory standards.
- Ability to assess network performance and develop effective solutions.
- Skilled in planning and executing infrastructure projects.
- Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills with cross‑functional teams and stakeholders.
- Ability to embrace new technologies and evolving industry trends.
- Commitment to safety protocols in design and maintenance activities.
Contract position based out of Pell City, AL.
Pay and BenefitsPay range: $35.00 - $58.00/hr.
