Working in collaboration with the Office of the Chief of Police, this position assumes oversight for the management of sworn and non-sworn employee positions in the Police Department. The Police Captain has responsibility for the overall management oversight and direction of operations and personnel of a division within the Police Department. Police Captains may respond to calls for service; however, the primary responsibilities are managerial, including the coordination of activities with those of other City departments and law enforcement agencies.
In the absence of the Chief of Police, the Police Captain may assume the duties thereon.

- This position assumes command of the Police Department in the absence of the Police Chief and Deputy Chief of Police as needed, or as assigned.
- This position plans and directs operations and administrative resources to accomplish department goals and objectives, including responsibility for patrol operations; special event planning; emergency management investigations, reports, and report writing; application and enforcement of departmental policies and procedures, professional standards performance evaluations, customer and staff relations development and execution of in-service training and field training and evaluation; crime prevention education; and community-based outreach and initiatives.
- Supports the mission and vision of the Pelham Police Department by way of positive and meaningful community interactions that support strong working relationships and partnership building.
- Identifies researches and evaluates best practices in law enforcement; facilitates corrective actions; implements process improvement initiatives; and, formulates proposals and recommendations based on cost analysis and supporting data/research.
- Assists the Office of the Chief of Police in developing, implementing, and maintaining internal policies, procedures, and practices.
- Works closely with the Office of the Chief of Police to write, revise, communicate, and execute departmental general orders and policies.
- Ensures that all operational, administrative, and organizational matters are uniformly executed, and effectively communicate, and effectively execute departmental general orders and policies; selects, trains, supervises and evaluates staff. Effectively supervises multiple assigned police personnel.
- Investigates, analyzes and reports upon employee performance and misconduct; recommends specialized training, professional development, disciplinary and corrective actions.
- Provides staff assistance to the Office of the Chief of Police; prepares and presents staff reports and other correspondence as appropriate and necessary; prepares a variety of reports and makes presentations.
- Serves as staff on a variety of boards, commissions, and committees; prepares and presents staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
- Attends and participates in professional group meetings and committees; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of law enforcement.
- Coordinates activities of Departmental Divisions, Squads, and specialized units.
- Analyzes, coordinates, and assigns employees according to shift/beat requirements relative to crimes committed, potential crimes, traffic control, traffic enforcement, and other real or anticipated calls-for-service.
- Maintains duty roster and handles scheduling problems of assigned personnel.
- Performs oversight duties relative to overall departmental scheduling to maintain high standards of service delivery.
- Delegates duties to subordinates to the maximum degree possible and supervise the overall operation of the Police Department.
- Mediates and attempts to resolve differences or conflicts between citizens and assigned subordinates. Acts as final citizen complaint contact as required under Departmental General Orders.
- Oversees and coordinates prospective employee candidate interview panels, evaluate candidates, compile recommendations from subordinate supervisors, and make hiring recommendations based on the result.
