Pharmacy Technician

Location:

Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) & Federal Prison Camp (FPC), Pekin, IL

Schedule:

Full-time, Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM (excluding federal holidays)

Position Summary

The Pharmacy Technician will provide professional pharmacy support services within the Health Services Department at FCI and FPC Pekin. This role involves assisting pharmacists in medication preparation, inventory management, and maintaining compliance with federal regulations and institutional policies in a correctional environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist pharmacists in ordering, stocking, storing, and dispensing prescription and non-prescription medications in compliance with BOP formulary guidelines.
  • Maintain pharmacy areas in a clean and orderly manner, adhering to safety and sanitation standards.
  • Monitor and manage medication inventory, including crash carts, emergency bags, and automated dispensing systems.
  • Prepare unit dose and pre-packaged medications as directed.
  • Maintain narcotics counts and needle/syringe inventories.
  • Update and file Medication Administration Records and other pharmacy documentation.
  • Perform audits of “Night Stock” and automated dispensing systems.
  • Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
  • Perform clerical duties such as data entry, scheduling, scanning, and filing using electronic medical record systems.
  • Ensure compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC), ACA standards, and institutional security protocols.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a formal Pharmacy Technician training program or equivalent on-the-job training.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy operations, medication safety, and infection control practices.
  • Ability to work effectively with healthcare professionals and maintain professionalism in a correctional setting.
  • Preferred:
    Experience in a correctional or institutional healthcare environment.
Health & Security Requirements
  • Must be free of communicable diseases and comply with required health screenings (e.g., TB testing).
  • Must pass background checks and adhere to all institutional security regulations.
  • Professional attire required (no khaki or green clothing).
