Position: Nature Center Intern (Education, Outreach & Visitor Services)

Position Summary

The Nature Center Intern supports the City of Pearland Parks & Recreation Department by assisting with nature education, visitor engagement, programming support, and general operations at the Nature Center. This entry‑level internship is ideal for candidates interested in environmental education, biology, ecology, wildlife conservation, parks management, or public service. Limited experience is welcome—training and supervision will be provided.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Visitor Services and Public Engagement
  • Welcome visitors, answer basic questions, and support a positive guest experience.
  • Assist with front desk operations as assigned (sign‑ins, program check‑ins, handouts).
  • Support visitor safety and rules of the facility/trails by providing friendly guidance.
Environmental Education and Programming Support
  • Assist with nature education programs (tours, school groups, workshops, seasonal events).
  • Help prepare materials for programs (activity supplies, handouts, displays, sign‑in sheets).
  • Support development of simple educational content (fact sheets, activity guides, interpretive signage drafts) with supervisor review.
Operations and Exhibit Support
  • Help maintain indoor/outdoor learning spaces (basic organization, restocking materials, light cleaning of program areas).
  • Support exhibit readiness (refreshing displays, labeling, organizing educational materials).
  • Assist with inventory tracking for education supplies and outreach materials.
Field and Special Projects (as assigned)
  • Assist with trail/park readiness checks and reporting needs to supervisors.
  • Help document wildlife observations or program metrics (attendance, feedback summaries).
  • Support special projects such as community science initiatives, outreach campaigns, or volunteer coordination support.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in (or recently completed) a degree/certificate program (any major welcome; environmental science, biology, ecology, education, parks & recreation, or related fields preferred).
  • Interest in nature education, community engagement, and public service.
  • Strong customer service and ability to communicate professionally with the public.
  • Basic computer skills (email, Word/Excel) and willingness to learn City processes.
Preferred Qualifications (Not Required)
  • Experience working with children, families, or the public (volunteering, camps, tutoring, customer service).
  • Comfort speaking in front of small groups and assisting with educational activities.
  • Basic knowledge of local wildlife, native plants, or environmental stewardship.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain if needed).

  • Friendly, professional demeanor and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Organized, dependable, and detail‑oriented.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and facility guidelines.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Working Conditions /

Physical Requirements
  • Combination of indoor facility and outdoor field/trail environments.
  • Exposure to heat, humidity, insects, and uneven terrain during outdoor activities.
  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods and lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally (e.g., 25 lbs).
  • Evening/weekend work may be required for events and programs.
Additional Requirements
  • Must meet City internship program eligibility requirements.
  • Must follow safety procedures and any applicable supervision requirements when working with youth groups or the public.
Salary

$15.00 - $17.00 per hour
