TITLE:
School Adjustment Counselor
REPORTS TO:
Administrator of Special Education
POSITION
DESCRIPTION:
The School Adjustment Counselor uses home-school relations as the medium through which an individual student’s response to and benefit from the school and its programs can be strengthened and improved. The School Adjustment Counselor works with parents, teachers and other support staff to develop a remedial plan for the student and works with the child, teachers, other support staff and parents to deal constructively with the student behavior.
In school position
- Provide Direct services to Special Education Students requiring social/emotional/behavioral services as written in the Individualized Education Program including:
- Social Skills Group
- Small group
- Individual counseling
- Crisis Intervention
- Provide Clinical Consultation to staff for Special Education Students requiring this service as written in the Individualized Education Program
- Consults and collaborates with collateral service providers for Special Education Students in order to coordinate treatment planning and school based interventions
- Consults and collaborates with school psychologists, guidance counselors, nurses, principals, and classroom teachers in assessing the mental and emotional health of students having school difficulty and evolving appropriate remedial plans
- Consults and collaborates with parents/guardians/school staff in order to help all parties involved comprehend and deal constructively with anomalous behavior
- Assists in developing IEP goals for Special Education Students with social/emotional disabilities, behavior plans, and therapeutic interventions for these students who present with a variety of social/emotional learning needs
- Conducts Functional Behavior Assessments for students with disabilities in order to facilitate eligibility determination, service delivery, and intervention planning
- Available for Crisis Intervention for the general student population
- Available for Clinical Consultation with all general and special education staff regarding student concerns
- Provides referral information to staff and parents to help obtain necessary aid/support from specialized public or private organizations in serious clinical cases, which appear to be beyond the resources of the school
- Maintains complete, up-to-date, and accurate records as required by law, policy, and administrative regulations
- Performs such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as the Administrator of Special Education may assign
- Master’s in social work, guidance or psychology.
- Minimum of two years working experience with children under 18 in an educational, child guidance, mental health or clinical setting.
- DESE license:
School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor and LICSW or LCSW preferred.
