Overview
The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled work in the construction, repair and maintenance of roads, right-of-ways, auxiliary structures, and secondary roads; operate various types of construction equipment in accordance with safety regulations and procedures. Ensures the safe operations of recycling and landfill; weighs vehicles, directs traffic and assists customers at the landfill. Operates trucks, performs cleaning duties and trains new employees.
The employee will be assigned to the Roads Division or the Recycling & Landfill Division and will be asked to work in either Division as required on a temporary basis.
- Operate road construction and maintenance equipment including front end loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, street sweepers, transfer trucks and compactors, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; and landfill equipment, water truck for dust control, compactor, scraper, bulldozer, and loader for piling solid waste and maintain lifts as required. Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations applicable to solid waste disposal.
- Grade roads, pave roads, replace asphalt, patch and repair roads, clean roadways and sweep streets. Maintain ditches and culverts, including removing debris, installing culverts and ensuring efficient flow of culverts.
- Move dirt at landfill operations according to precise regulations; plan land and slope grades for safe equipment operation and build refuse lifts.
- Coordinate Department of Corrections inmate work detail. Perform manual labor assignments as needed, including fire control, accident and hazardous materials cleanup, guardrail and foliage maintenance and debris removal; cut and remove brush and trees impacting roadways as required; assist landfill customers to unload refuse safely, and separate recyclable products at the landfill.
- Follow safety regulations on all work zones and flagging sites, including placing barricades and cones; conduct landfill liner leakage testing, waste oil barrel cleaning, Freon removal from appliances, recycle battery storage and waste tire programs; perform emergency road services in relation to fires, floods and roadway inspection.
- Haul materials and transport vehicles and equipment to jobsites using various trucks and transporters. Inspect, clean and perform routine operational checks on trucks and heavy equipment and report necessary repairs.
- Perform traffic control activities including setting up signs and flagging traffic; direct traffic at the landfill. May perform emergency road services in relation to snow removal, flood damage repair, rockslides, and fires.
Assignment to either the Roads Division or the Recycling & Landfill Division may occur on a temporary basis as needed.
