Wage Range:
- Medical Assistant I: $22.50 - $24.81 per hour
- Medical Assistant II (Certified or Registered): $24.00 - $26.46 per hour
- Medical Assistant for San Luis Obispo or Cambria: $25.00 - $27.56 per hour
Summary: Under the supervision of the Health Center Manager (HCM) and Clinic Services Supervisor (CSS), the Medical Assistant (MA) plays a key role in delivering efficient, high‑quality care to patients at Community Health Centers of the Central Coast (CHCCC). Depending on the site and specialty, the MA performs non‑professional clinical duties, operates medical and laboratory equipment, and assists with patient care, including physically demanding tasks.
Additionally, the MA supports the team with clerical duties and helps maintain effective workflow and operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Actively participates in assigned Patient Care Team duties and activities.
- Provides quality customer service using AIDET Standards.
- Administers medications via oral, parenteral, and topical routes as per Provider’s written orders.
- Performs preliminary intake of vitals and determines need for immunizations, lead screening, preventive exams, and other health‑maintenance recommendations for specific age groups.
- Performs in‑house CLIA Waived laboratory tests (urinalysis, pregnancy tests, strep, etc.) and observes manufacturer instructions, ensuring quality controls daily.
- May assist with referral and tracking for routine visits, ancillary services, and external providers.
- Greets patients using two identifiers, escorts them to exam rooms, and monitors waiting areas to minimize wait times.
- Provides comfort and encouragement for patients with anxiety.
- Maintains clean and safe patient areas and follows safety procedures.
- Ensures appropriate documentation of immunizations, intake, vitals, medication reconciliation, etc., in the electronic medical record.
- May act as an interpreter using appropriate grammar between patient and provider.
- Cleans and disinfects instruments and prepares them for sterilization.
- Answers telephones, completes all tasks in inbox, assists patients, and ensures messages are answered by the end of day.
- Attends meetings and trainings as required.
- Works with a high volume of patients and adapts to frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events.
- Demonstrates adherence to safety policies and infection‑control rules.
- Demonstrates necessary knowledge and skills appropriate for patient age groups.
- Demonstrates knowledge of domestic violence, child and dependent abuse protocols.
- Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and competence.
- Maintains HIPAA, employee confidentiality, and privileged communications.
- Promotes the principle of health‑care integration and a patient‑centered medical home.
Qualifications:
Education and/or
Experience:
High school diploma or GED required. Graduation from an accredited school in Medical Assisting or certification/registration (CMA/RMA) through a California Medical Board‑approved organization. If not certified at hire, must pass test within one year. Minimum one year of recent medical‑assisting work experience in a medical field preferred, with EKG, vital signs, venipuncture, and injections experience.
Language
Skills:
Ability to read, interpret, and write documents; speak before groups; bilingual desirable.
Mathematical
Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, compute rates, ratios, percentages, and draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability: Apply sound judgment; make appropriate decisions following standard office policies.
Computer
Skills:
Experience with word processing, spreadsheets, e‑mail, keyboarding, Microsoft Office, and Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations: CMA/RMA; valid California Driver’s License (Class
C); CPR (BLS‑C) card with renewal within 30 days. Must pass background check, drug screen, annual health exam, TB test, and provide proof of immunizations (MMR, Varicella, Hep B, Tdap). Flu vaccine required during flu season.
Physical Demands: Ability to use hands, reach, stand, walk, lift up to 25 lbs; maintain body mechanics for patient transfers and dressing assistance.
Work Environment: Fast‑paced environment with moderate noise and occasional mechanical parts. Requires flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and travel.
