Qualifications& Requirements
A Health Unit Coordinator is an administrative professional responsible for managing the flow of information and clerical tasks within a busy department, ensuring efficient operations and effective communication among the medical team, patients, and families. Key responsibilities include coordinating patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, maintaining and organizing medical records and electronic health records (EHRs), managing unit supplies and equipment, and serving as a central point of communication by answering phones, relaying messages, and scheduling diagnostic tests.
This role requires strong organizational, multitasking, critical-thinking, and customer service skills, along with familiarity with medical terminology.
- Coordinate patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Maintain and organize medical records and electronic health records (EHRs).
- Manage unit supplies and equipment.
- Answer phones, relay messages, and schedule diagnostic tests.
- Provide clerical and administrative support to nurses and other medical professionals.
- Ensure unit operations run smoothly by managing data and maintaining a clean, orderly work environment.
- Assist with preparing insurance forms and other administrative documents.
- Act as go-between for medical staff, patients, and families, answering administrative questions.
- Must have Certified Nursing Assistant License.
- Current American Heart Association BLS certificate or obtain within 90 days after hire.
- Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
