Fire Technician – Above/Underground Water Utility Technician

Total Safety is looking for a Fire Technician – Underground Water Utility Technician to join their safety‑conscious team. The role involves service, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of fire equipment including portable and semi‑portable fire extinguishers, lifesaving equipment, fire and gas detection systems, foam systems, dry chemical systems, gaseous suppression systems, and water‑based fire protection systems. The candidate will also replace and repair fire hydrants, PIVs, and fire monitors, work in excavations to replace valves, hydrants, and perform repairs on ductile iron, HDPE, and carbon steel pipe.

Basic installation, repair, and maintenance of water systems, including laying pipe and ensuring proper grade and gravel layer, are also required.

Essential Duties
  • Knowledge of construction and operation of collection/distribution systems, various types of pipes, equipment used in repair and installation of fire and utility water systems, cleaning techniques, tools and supplies.
  • Performs shop service and/or field inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair (if certified) of fire equipment including portable and fixed fire extinguisher systems, lifesaving and navigation aid equipment, fixed breathing air systems, fire detection and alarm system components, fixed gas detection systems, foam, dry chemical, gaseous fire suppression systems, and water‑based fire protection systems.
  • Completes all documentation associated with inspection and repair in a timely and accurate manner and obtains signature from customer for invoicing.
  • Conducts detailed visual inspections and system functional tests of various systems and equipment, reports deficiencies, and recommends corrective actions.
  • Conducts pre‑job, job update, and post‑job completion briefs.
  • Assists others in facilities, stocking shelves with clean, tested, ready‑to‑use equipment and staging orders for truck delivery.
  • Maintains work area and associated areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Performs basic maintenance and care of assigned vehicle and/or trailer.
  • Rig‑up and use a wide range of safety equipment, including retractable lifelines, harnesses, and lanyards.
  • Assists others as needed.
Skills and Experience
  • Valid driver’s license from state of residence, and valid proof of vehicle insurance.
  • Safe driving record and insurability for Total Safety vehicle insurance while driving company truck.
  • Forklift experience is a plus; must be able to pass internal forklift certification as required.
  • Willing to travel to customer site, including short and long‑term out‑of‑town and/or offshore projects.
  • Ability to obtain TWIC card and pass required safety testing (Basic Plus, OSHA 10 hour, etc.).
  • Have or obtain an applicable State Fire Licenses (if required) or pass NICET Level II testing within 12 months of hire if state licensing not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate electronic safety equipment and understand fire systems and components.
  • Ability to operate, maintain, reassemble, and test electronic safety equipment per manufacturers’ specifications.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose equipment problems and take corrective action within policy and procedure limitations.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards pertaining to responsibilities, e.g., State, OSHA, NFPA regulations.
  • Knowledge of applicable Code of Federal Regulations, Coast Guard, ABS regulations if offshore.
  • Proficiency in care and use of site‑specific PPE; trained in Respiratory Protection and fully certified to wear respiratory equipment (Fit Tested) where required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
Working Environment

Shop, indoor and outdoor industrial environments. May be frequently exposed to cold, hot, wet, humid, outside weather conditions and vibration. Works in customer environments. May be exposed to high pressure, chemicals, traffic. Noise level usually moderate.

Educational Requirements

High School diploma or GED and at least one (1) year of field experience in fire protection, petrochemical, oil refinery or related industry. Associate degree, technical or military training strongly preferred.
