Provides leasing, manufacturing, and repair services to our customers and owns/manages one of the largest fleets of railroad tank cars in North America. Job Description
The Lead Railcar Technician conducts all aspects of repair and maintenance on railcars. This person must demonstrate good leadership and team skills while being a safety-conscious person. Will also be responsible for providing quality and safety training, along with monthly safety meetings with customers and site personnel.
- Some travel may be required
- Tank Qualification experience is a plus
- Understand and perform all work outlined under Supervision
- Conduct railcar inspections to ensure cars comply with all FRA, AAR, and customer requirements
- Perform repairs as necessary while always using current safety and quality standards and repair procedures
- Perform mechanical repairs to railroad freight cars including tank and hopper cars when required
- Occasionally performing welding repairs when needed
- Coordinate and complete repairs in an efficient manner and within assigned hours
- Maintain work area in a neat and orderly manner and report potential hazards.
- Notify supervision of any materials and/or equipment required to ensure completion of job tasks
- Interact well with team members and supervisor
- Meet the expectations and requirements of all customers to ensure we deliver a best-in-class customer experience
- Ensure all necessary invoicing, inspection, and work order information is accurate and complete
- Actively participate in safety assessments and equipment inspections
- Follow all safety rules and practices
- May be involved in safety committees or initiatives
- Fill in for Supervisor duties when out
- Assist with internal and external audits
- Ordering parts, receiving PO’s and inventory management
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Must hold RT3 / RT3F certifications at minimum which includes Air Brake Testing (ABT) and Designated Inspector (DI)
- Must have completion of TM-02/TM-03 Quality Training
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must hold a Valid Driver’s License
- Demonstrate job-related knowledge including following written instructions
- Demonstrate an ability to safely operate machinery including, but not limited to large work vehicles, which may also pull trailers from time to time, and forklifts
- Be dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts including any overtime
- Ability to learn basic railcar knowledge
- Proficiency with the use of basic hand and power tools
- Ability to learn basic knowledge of how to read Engineering drawings
- Ability to pass DOT Requirements is a plus
- Ability to perform confined space entry or monitoring and create hot work permits
- Ability to pass any required NDT disciplines and function specific certifications, which may include tank car welding, and demonstrates strong familiarity with AAR rules and regulations
- Ability to obtain all of the certifications required for Railcar Tech Level 5:
Timeline and required test depend on specific location - Any type of welding/mechanical experience or railcar knowledge is preferred
- Must be legal to work in the United State now and in the future without sponsorship requirements
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing positions
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds from the ground surface
- Must be able to climb ladders and perform work at elevated heights
- Must be able to work in confined spaces and be able to enter into a 20" diameter access hatch.
- Must be able to perform a FIT Test and wear a respirator
- Must be able to pass company physical exam, drug screening and background check
