About Carbon Mapper
Carbon Mapper is a non-profit organization based in Pasadena, CA with the mission to drive greenhouse gas emission reductions by making methane and carbon dioxide data accessible and actionable. We leverage remote sensing technology to detect, pinpoint, and quantify methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at the scale of individual facilities. All of our methane and CO2 data is made publicly available for non-commercial use on our Carbon Mapper Data Portal to provide decision makers with the information they need to prioritize and take mitigation action.
Carbon Mapper also works with stakeholders and decision makers to fill data gaps, lead on cutting edge science, collaborate to drive reductions, and advance education and insights on emissions globally. To do this, we work with partners to leverage a constellation of satellites. Data from these satellites will offer the next major step in scaling up the organization’s robust data portal featuring thousands of direct observations of global methane and CO2 super-emitters.

AboutThe Role
Carbon Mapper is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scholar to contribute to the validation, improvement, and application of Carbon Mapper methane emissions data, with a particular focus on the waste sector and scientific research that supports stakeholder needs and policy decisions in the sector. This role offers the opportunity to publish findings internally and externally and to help elevate the visibility and impact of Carbon Mapper’s data products.
The Postdoctoral Scholar appointment is for an initial term of two years, with the potential for renewal based on performance and funding.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Analyze existing Carbon Mapper datasets, with emphasis on waste-related methane emissions
- Evaluation of bottom-up models and inventories through inter-comparison with Carbon Mapper datasets, including testing of uncertainties in bottom-up models and observations
- Application of statistical methods for reconciling top-down remote sensing observations with bottom-up methane models
Skills & Experience:
- Ph.D. (or equivalent) in environmental science/engineering, atmospheric science, biogeochemistry or a related discipline
- Experience using models or inventories to understand methane emission sources and/or carbon cycles
- Experience working with atmospheric observations (e.g., remote sensing, direct measurements) and environmental datasets (e.g., meteorological data, DOC measurements)
- Familiarity with methodologies used by government or industry to report and track atmospheric pollutants (e.g., greenhouse gas or air pollutant reporting programs, national emission inventories, IPCC methods)
- Experience using data analysis and visualization tools like python and QGIS/ArcGIS, preferably experience with statistical packages in python
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, including scientific publications
Skills:
- Demonstrated domain expertise in solid waste/landfills
- Experience working with waste sector specific datasets (e.g., landfill gas data, SEM surveys, waste composition data)
- Familiarity with modeling microbial methane production in natural or manmade systems
- Experience working with stakeholders to interpret greenhouse gas data or models
- Understanding of remote sensing concepts, particularly as they relate to satellite based observations and methane emissions quantification
