The Home Care Aide is responsible for providing non‑medical personal care, supervision, assistance and companionship; in addition to maintaining a safe and clean environment for clients who require supervision because of advanced age, physical disabilities, mental deficiencies, or other health‑related conditions.
Responsibilities- Assistance with clients’ Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
- Ambulation, Transfers & Gait Assistance:
Provides hands‑on and/or stand‑by assistance to ensure that client transfers and ambulates safely (includes assistance with the proper use of ambulation aids such as walkers, wheelchairs, gait belts, Hoyer lifts, etc.). - Bathing, Grooming & Hygiene:
Provides hands‑on and/or stand‑by assistance with bathing, showering and other grooming activities (may include bed baths/sponges baths when client is unable to use the shower/bathtub). - Meal Preparation / Nutritional Support:
Follows nutritional and meal‑planning guidelines to assist with preparation and serving of breakfast, lunch, dinner and/or snacks to ensure proper nutritional intake (including dietary supplements). - Dressing:
Provides hands‑on and/or stand‑by assistance with changes of client’s clothing as needed. - Toileting:
May include assisting on/off toilet or commode; assisting with use of urinal or bedpan; emptying catheter or colostomy bag; changing diapers/briefs; and ensuring cleanliness of client as needed. - Oral medication reminders (caregivers are not permitted to administer medication)
- Light housekeeping duties to maintain a safe and clean environment:
- Launder client’s clothing, bed sheets, linens and towels as requested (washing, drying, folding and putting clean items away).
- Maintain cleanliness of client’s bathroom by cleaning and disinfecting the toilet, shower, bathtub, sink, counters and floor.
- Maintain cleanliness of kitchen by properly disposing of expired food, washing dishes, and cleaning the sink, counters, stove top, floor and other surfaces (NOT responsible for oven cleaning).
- Maintain tidiness of client’s bedroom and living areas by tidying up, changing bed sheets, vacuuming/sweeping/mopping floors, dusting surfaces and emptying trash receptacles.
- Transportation / escort to appointments:
Drives client and spouse if requested to scheduled appointments in the local community (use of caregiver’s car is preferable); escorts client into appointment location and assists with ambulation/transfers as needed; remains in the waiting room or within a reasonable distance if client prefers privacy. - Supervision and companionship:
Engages client in appropriate conversations (caregiver is to avoid personal disclosures about self, and discussions about client’s family); takes client on walks near the client’s home; entertains client by reading newspapers or books, playing memory games, completing puzzles, etc. - Assist with Range of Motion exercises as requested (initial demonstration by a family member, physical therapist, or other licensed healthcare professional is recommended).
- Compliance with all state laws and agency policies related to the timely mandated reporting of suspected child, dependent adult and elder abuse and domestic violence.
- Compliance with agency policies related to all areas of privacy and confidentiality, including HIPAA laws.
- Observance of safety guidelines as outlined in the Employee Safety Manual.
- Timely reporting of any unusual occurrence in client’s home or change in client’s condition to supervisor (agency must be called immediately upon such knowledge).
- Prompt arrival to and completion of all shifts as assigned (if client requests a schedule change, supervisor must be notified as soon as possible and prior to implementation of the change).
- Must be able to speak, write, read, and understand English.
- Must be able to sit and climb stairs.
- Must have visual and hearing acuity.
- Must have a strong sense of smell and touch.
- Must be able to function in a wide variety of environments which may involve exposure to allergens and other various conditions.
