Duration of Assignment: 6 months (possibility of extension)
Work hours: 7:30 am to 4pm
Dress code: pants (no shorts) and short or long-sleeved shirts. You may want to bring along a sweater as the AC is a little unpredictable and can get mighty powerful sometimes. Shoes must be non-absorbent, and closed-toe. Nails must be kept short, and hair must be tied back, if long. We encourage a semi-professional appearance. No tank tops, leggings, or anything that would not be considered appropriate for the work environment.
Scrubs are ok, as are jeans and t-shirts.
Parking: Free.

The Lab Assistant supports the Endocrine lab by contributing to specimen processing, office administration, and general laboratory operations. This position is critical for ensuring the accuracy and consistency of lab workflows and upholding the credibility of the lab.
1. Specimen Processing- Receives blood samples delivered by mail, Fed Ex, courier, etc.
- Assigns a unique barcode to each specimen and preps samples for testing.
- Separates blood from serum using a centrifuge.
- Checks and verifies incoming paperwork for accuracy and completeness. Resolves any issues or concerns related to samples or paperwork.
- Provides excellent customer service and communicates with clients (other labs, doctors’ offices, Norris and Medical Centers).
- Ensures utmost attention to detail to avoid errors, as improper handling or mislabeling can have significant consequences.
- Does not perform data entry related to sample processing; this is handled by a related team.
- Must be proficient in MS Excel and MS Word.
- Prepares patient past sheets, verifies patient records, and performs data entry tasks.
- Assists with patient billing documentation.
- Disperses patient reports via fax, email, or mail.
- Handles various administrative tasks in support of lab workflow.
- Organizes, archives, and pulls samples to and from freezers.
- Monitors and records temperatures in storage units.
- Assists with instrument maintenance and routine inventory checks.
- Prepares and ships supply orders to clients.
- Carries out other routine lab duties and general clean-up as needed.
- Has experience or knowledge in a medical office or laboratory environment (minimum of 12 months desired; school or volunteer work is acceptable).
- BA/BS degree is not required.
- Reliable, punctual, and presents a professional appearance.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy.
- Problem solver—actively seeks accurate information and does not make assumptions.
- Strong communicator and team player with good interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Able to function in a serious, structured work setting; more extraverted personalities may not be the best fit.
- Must have no classes or other commitments that conflict with scheduled work hours.
- Comfortable with stable, long-term work commitments.
- Understands laboratory workflow and the importance of the Pre-Analytical, Analytical, and Post-Analytical phases.
- May be trained and comply with lab policies and procedures, including Exposure Control (blood borne pathogens), Chemical Hazards, and lab Quality Control and Assurance Programs.
- Performs documentation thoroughly and organizes work for efficient task completion.
- Department provides intensive training and seeks workers who may be a good fit for long-term roles (possible transition to Lab Tech, though not guaranteed).
- Lab environment is suited for those who prefer consistent, structured work rather than frequent challenges or discoveries.
- Required to commute to the lab reliably and arrive on time.
- Temporary workers may be considered for permanent positions based on performance and department needs.
*** This is a hands-on position responsible for specimen processing, office administration, and general laboratory support. The ideal candidate values consistency, accuracy, and teamwork in a professional laboratory setting, and is seeking meaningful and stable experience in the medical laboratory field.
