Hardware Development Engineer, Quantum Engineering, Fabrication, AWS CQC

Job  | Amazon Development Center U.S., Inc.

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) Center for Quantum Computing (CQC) is a multi‑disciplinary team of scientists and engineers, on a mission to develop a fault‑tolerant quantum computer. We are looking to hire a Hardware Development Engineer with microfabrication experience in a cleanroom environment. The candidate should have process integration experience in superconducting devices, MEMS, or semiconductor solid‑state devices fabricated using thin film deposition, wet and dry etch processes, wet or vapor release, CMP, with special focus on direct write and masked‑based photolithography.

The position is on‑site at our lab in Pasadena, CA, and may call for second‑shift work.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Develop lithography processes for superconducting qubits using direct‑write maskless and conventional masked‑based lithography.
  • Leverage process integration skills based on experience in device fabrication of superconducting qubits, MEMS, and/or semiconductor solid‑state devices.
  • Work closely with the photolithography team to develop new processes for superconducting qubits, improve and sustain existing processes, and implement proper controls.
  • Collaborate closely with researchers, scientists, and engineers leading complex projects.
  • Analyze and interpret complex scientific data, providing critical insights and recommendations based on experiments devised to improve superconducting device room‑temperature and cryogenic performance.
  • Mentor and train staff members in lithography, etch, thin‑film deposition, and other fabrication techniques.
  • Coordinate with external vendors and internal hardware equipment engineers to resolve tool issues.
A Day in the Life

The role will be vital to the fabrication team. Photolithography and related processes such as incoming thin films, downstream etch, etc., are critical to the performance of components and sub‑components for superconducting circuits. The candidate will work with scientists and engineers to develop and improve processes supported by photolithography processing, adjust monitoring, and develop new tools as necessary. Second‑shift and occasional weekend work may be required.

About

the Team

Our team is comprised of scientists and engineers building hardware that enables quantum computing technologies. Fabrication of quantum devices requires close attention to detail, data analysis, and the development of tools to better understand the data.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or above in engineering, physics, or equivalent.
  • Hands‑on cleanroom experience using maskless direct laser writing photolithography, spin coating, thin‑film deposition, wet and dry etch, and other nanofabrication processes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with written and verbal communication and presentation.
  • MS or PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Material Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Working knowledge of CAD software with the ability to create scripts using programming languages such as Python.

Base salary range: $126,300 - $164,800 annually.
