Job Summary

Full-time position responsible for implementing Caltech’s Fire Protection Program and participating in occupational health and safety program management including specialized technical support to a wide range of environmental, occupational health and safety disciplines that align with the organization’s EH&S standards and with federal and state regulatory requirements.

This is an Essential Reporting position. In the event of an emergency on campus, an employee designated as essential reporting has essential job skills that are needed for response and recovery and is expected to report to Campus as soon as possible.

Essential Job Duties

  • Performs advanced technical and administrative duties in fire prevention, hazardous material management, laboratory and campus safety, chemical safety, emergency response, regulatory compliance, and training. Maintains current knowledge of Fire Protection Standards and other regulatory requirements and updates EH&S Programs accordingly.
  • Under general supervision, develops, implements, and conducts hazard assessments, training programs, and inspections necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and the campus community.
  • Serves as EH&S Fire Prevention and Life Safety subject matter expert to ensure Divisions, Facilities Operations, Student housing and other Caltech departments are properly using flammables and hazardous materials and managing other fire hazards.
  • Prepares the Campus Fire Safety Right to Know Act materials including the Annual Fire Safety Report and maintaining the related fire log. Provides supporting services to the campus including monitoring evacuation and emergency drills and safety training for new students, staff, and faculty, and helps develop building-specific emergency action plans.
  • Conducts site inspections of hazardous material users to verify and review accuracy of business plans and chemical inventories; certifies Hazardous Material Business Plan (HMBP) information in CERS as complete, accurate, and in conformance with EPCRA reporting requirements.
  • Conducts calendared and on-demand employee training and investigates fire/life/safety incidents for root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Assists in the design, administration, and review of HAZWOPER training for EH&S and other Caltech personnel.
  • Serves as EH&S liaison with the City of Pasadena Fire Department, HAZ/MAT Teams, and First Responders/SRO’s for exercises, training, and emergency response.
  • Directs packaging and shipping activities of Hazardous Material using technical knowledge, training, and expertise. Ensures the implementation of DOT, NRC, DOE, and EPA regulations while shipping hazardous, radioactive, and waste material in a safe and efficient manner. Identifies the appropriate DOT packaging and classifies the material to properly prepare shipments for transport with minimal management oversight.
  • Works closely with Facilities Operations, Divisions personnel and other departments to apply innovative technical knowledge and recommend improvements in processes, policy, procedures, to minimize potentially hazardous conditions.
  • Demonstrates awareness of OSHA general industry standards, and ability to investigate accidents, injuries, and concerns related to hazards or conditions in the workplace. Ensures managers and supervisors provide and train employees in safe work practices.
  • Applies specialized knowledge of processes, procedures, and equipment used in monitoring and auditing EH&S conditions.
  • Performs additional duties as directed by management.
