Job Summary:
Provides instructional support for faculty across the curriculum by assisting students. Instructs students individually or in small groups working on writing projects to improve their planning, drafting, revising, editing, or presenting skills as well as to effectively use software or online resources to successfully complete writing assignments. Fields faculty questions and concerns in the Coordinator’s absence.
Responsibilities- Provide supplemental instruction to students from any discipline with writing assignments or writing‑related coursework.
- Assist students one‑on‑one, in small groups, or online in developing writing strategies at all stages (pre‑writing, organizing, drafting, revising, editing, presenting).
- Teach strategies for longer research papers or technical reports, including paraphrasing, summarizing, quoting, plagiarism avoidance, in‑text citations, and MLA/APA bibliographies.
- Prepare resumes, applications, scholarship letters.
- Use online resources (e.g., Purdue OWL, LB Brief) and assist with OWL training.
- Manage student sign‑in/out using Tutor Trac, schedule appointments.
- Maintain comprehensive resources and instructional materials; develop supplemental materials as needed.
- Conduct Writing Center tours, classroom visits, and workshops as directed by the Coordinator.
- Attend Writing Center meetings, train new staff, present training materials, recommend curriculum enhancements.
- Collaborate with all Writing Center staff to promote a supportive, inspiring, and tolerant learning environment.
- Participate in professional development opportunities.
- AS degree with demonstrated mastery in college composition and rhetoric.
- Comfort with public speaking preferred.
- Experience functioning in a writing center or with a range of software and online resources related to writing.
- Mastery of grammar, mechanics, writing processes, and research strategies.
- Computer skills sufficient to use specified software.
- Strong communication skills to interact informally with students of diverse backgrounds and ability levels.
- Ability to work independently; interpret faculty instructions; manage a group of writers.
- Ability to respond sensitively to student academic challenges.
- Ability to enforce Writing Center etiquette and best practices.
- Capability to operate general office equipment and computers.
- Teaching experience in a writing classroom.
- Comfort with public speaking.
- Well‑developed listening and speaking abilities.
- Dexterity to operate keyboard or related equipment.
- Visual acuity to read words and numbers.
- Work performed in an open lab setting with minimal hazards.
Salary Grade 14: $18.25/hour
