Position: Staff Engineer (Geotechnical)

Staff Engineer (Geotechnical) – SESI Consulting Engineers

Summary

Coordinates the planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of engineering projects within the assigned responsibility area, performing duties personally or through subordinate supervisors. This staff position is considered a training position for candidates with degrees in a related field but with limited to no field experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct site inspections to monitor progress/conformance to specs and procedures
  • Design portions of projects
  • Perform calculations using engineering formulas and skills
  • Instruct drafters on reducing designs into completed drawings
  • Conduct routine geotechnical engineering laboratory checks
  • Lead concrete and rebar inspection testing
  • Perform research and write reports
  • Prepare samples of unapproved materials for laboratory testing
  • Use computer to run standard programs to solve engineering problems
  • Perform routine laboratory tests to determine various design parameters
  • Plan and implement engineering programs, including defining project philosophy, activities, milestones, and staff requirements per customer requirements
  • Develop and maintain a schedule and budget for the assigned engineering project
  • Provide reports on the status of project milestones and adjust schedules accordingly
  • Control expenditures within project budget
  • Identify project staffing requirements and coordinate staffing with supporting organization managers
  • Coordinate preparation and delivery of project deliverables, design documents, and bid packages
  • Review product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, customer contract requirements, and related specifications
  • Coordinate activities concerning technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and test problems
  • Prepare interim and completion project reports
  • Provide status and progress reports to customer, project team, and management
  • Classify soils according to standard types
  • Apply geological knowledge to engineering problems in construction projects, such as dams, tunnels, and large buildings
  • Prepare geologic reports and maps, interpret research data, and recommend further study or action
  • Conduct or participate in environmental studies and prepare environmental reports
  • Direct drilling of exploratory borings and wells
  • Oversee installation of monitoring wells in accordance with state and federal requirements
  • Collect or supervise collection of soil and groundwater samples for chemical composition analysis
  • Determine direction of groundwater flow based on historical records and site data
  • Determine the extent of contamination in soil and groundwater at environmental sites
  • Participate in decision making regarding research priorities and provide information on feasibility of prospective projects
  • Lead junior level staff and interns by providing guidance, answering questions, and being a resource to them
  • Direct tasks for junior staff and interns as needed
  • Identify potential for new projects and seek opportunities to promote the company’s services on an ongoing basis
  • Travel 25% (Site) to 100% (Geotechnical/Environmental) of the time; may be out of state
Qualifications

Education
:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or applicable Engineering Degree).

Experience
: 0 to 3 years of Site Civil, Geotechnical, or Environmental engineering experience; previous internship or construction experience preferred.

Licenses & Certifications
: 40‑hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification;
Registered Professional Engineer (PE) preferred or ability to become licensed within 6 months; ACI/NICET/NJ DCA Special Inspector and Nuclear Densometer certification; valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.

Skills
:
Proficient in verbal and written communication in English; ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical documents; mathematical skills (probability, statistics, geometry, trigonometry); reasoning ability; proficiency with AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D, Nitro Pro, GSLOPE, Key Wall, Rocscience, MS Office, Adobe.

Physical & Work Environment
:
Frequently stands, walks, uses hands, lifts up to 50 lbs, works outdoor up to 100% of time, requires appropriate safety gear.

Compensation
:
Base salary $55,000–$80,000, plus mileage reimbursement, benefits, paid time off, tuition reimbursement, professional development opportunities, 401(k), and bonus potential.
