Overview

Position authority, responsibility, and shift accountability for delivery of nursing care through nursing process. Incumbent applies clinical knowledge and independent judgment for care by self and delegated providers to achieve quality patient outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current RN license in state of services or multi-state RN license through enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.
Experience
  • Less than 12 months experience as registered nurse.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree (BSN).
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates safety and continuity of care using documentation, handoff tools/processes.
  • Creates plan of care using nursing process: assessment, diagnoses, intervention, evaluation of outcomes.
  • Recognizes patient safety concerns through appropriate resources.
  • Provides education based on unique learning needs of patient.
  • Incorporates patient individuality & mutuality data in delivery of care.
  • Performs adequate patient assessment and documentation.
  • Demonstrates teach‑back method to evaluate effectiveness of education.
  • Utilizes Evidence‑Based Practice (EBP) in nursing care.
  • Participates in organizational patient‑centered care model.
  • Documents problems and issues in plan of care.
  • Demonstrates growth in ability to care for more complex patients using consultation with experienced colleagues.
  • Demonstrates commitment to lifelong learning through self‑reflection and inquiry for learning and personal growth.
  • Retains accountability for delegated nursing care.
  • Recognizes scope of practice for all interprofessional team members.
  • Participates in holistic, culturally sensitive data collection.

Physical Requirements
  • Minimize manual lift of patients; limit safe patient handling to 35 pounds; use lift equipment or patient handling aids.
  • Heavy/Hard work: lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, carrying materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.
  • Visual acuity within normal range.
  • Hearing within normal range to assess breath sounds, bowel sounds, apical pulse, monitors.
Working Environment
  • Working protracted or irregular hours.
  • Working around biohazards.
  • Working around infectious diseases.
  • Working with or near the deceased.
  • Working with hands in water.
  • Working with electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment.

  • Uses competent clinical practice and critical thinking skills to efficiently deliver patient care with all health care providers while maximizing efficient use of resources.
  • Flexible in response to changes in work volume, staff and scheduling changes.
  • Works successfully under highly stressful conditions and adapts to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis.
CAPE Program

The CAPE program is a system‑wide clinical advancement program (clinical ladder) to enhance professional development, provide a reward system for quality clinical performance, promote quality nursing, and improve job satisfaction for inpatient direct care nurses.

Level 1
  • No experience required.
  • All graduate nurses with less than 12 months of experience enter at Level one with a diploma, ADN, BSN, or higher.
Level 2
  • Meets requirements for previous level.
  • One year of experience.
Level 3
  • Meets requirements for previous levels.
  • Two years of experience, plus one specialty certification.
  • Certification is preferred but not required.
  • Required competencies to include demonstration of regularly being a charge nurse and/or precepting new staff or nursing students.
Level 4
  • Available to those with a BSN or higher or nurses with ADN/diploma with 5 years of experience.
