The incumbent has the authority, responsibility, and shift accountability for the delivery of nursing care through the use of the nursing process. The incumbent accepts accountability, applies competent clinical knowledge skills, and uses independent nursing judgment for care provided by self and by health care providers to whom care is delegated to achieve quality patient care outcomes. The incumbent must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care that is relevant to the patient(s) under their care, as well as apply principles of growth and development over the life span.

The incumbent also must possess the ability to assess and interpret patient data needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age‑specific needs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or current multi‑state Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
  • State‑specific temporary RN permit requirements:
    • MD: No temporary permit issued. Must obtain permanent RN license within 90 days of graduation.
    • OH: No temporary permit issued. Must be currently licensed.
    • PA: Current PA Registered Nurse Temporary Permit. Must obtain permanent licensure within one year of graduation.
    • WV: Current WV Registered Nurse Grad Permit. Must obtain permanent licensure within 180 days from graduation.
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred or Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Diploma. Currently enrolled in a BSN program and expected to complete credential within 5 years of hire.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides direct patient care within the ambulatory setting, based on the nursing process and within role/scope of practice.
  • Performs preliminary assessment of patients through observation and chart review to facilitate appropriate follow‑up with the health care team.
  • Evaluates unstable or complex patient care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention.
  • Implements appropriate clinical decisions and demonstrates appropriate use of expert peers and/or management, as applicable.
  • Accepts accountability and uses independent nursing judgment for care provided by self and by health care providers.
  • Demonstrates the appropriate use of standards, effective use of resources, and evaluation of patient response in the delivery of patient care.
  • Uses standards of care and standards of practice to guide care delivery.
  • Bases decisions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, and/or research findings. Seeks assistance or credible resources when unable to perform safely and independently.
  • Determines/revises priorities for direct/indirect patient care activities based on patient acuity and available resources, updating daily care plan with appropriate algorithms for safe patient handling.
  • Uses established patient care support systems including documentation, communication, and information.
  • Responsible for educational instruction to patients and families with health care needs.
  • Identifies teaching/learning needs of patients.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of patient and family teaching and documents in patient charts.
  • Assists in orientation of new employees according to unit orientation plan.
  • Applies information gained from educational experiences when providing patient care and instruction.
  • Assumes responsibility for the development of others.
  • Engages in mentoring and networking activities to promote professional development.
  • Fosters the integration of staff and/or students into the health care team, facilitating the unit’s mission, values, and vision.
  • Demonstrates skill in the management of conflict situations.
  • Functions to promote trusting relationships and open, honest communication at the unit level.
  • Engages in exchange of information relevant to specific patient assignment.
  • Interacts with various members of the health care team to meet patient care needs.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities as appropriate.
