Under general supervision and medical direction performs respiratory care related procedures. Exercises judgment in accordance with physician's treatment plan and departmental policies. Scope includes patient/family assessment, resource management, care facilitation, and discharge planning as required. Assesses resident condition, administers prescribed therapy and aerosolized medications, observes and records progress and response to therapy. Provides in-service training to residents, family members, and facility staff.
Population is primarily adult and geriatric. Involves families or facility staff as needed in assessment and continuing care. Initiates, monitors and maintains life support systems for residents in the skilled nursing facility. Performs airway care and maintenance; manages artificial ventilator status as directed by protocol; maintains and troubleshoots ventilators; participates in CPR procedures; initiates, monitors and documents respiratory care modalities;
performs comprehensive assessments to formulate a respiratory care plan upon physician order.
- Check physician's orders for completeness; ensure diagnoses, ICD-10 code, therapy type and duration, medication type and dosage, FiO2 and frequency are documented.
- Review resident history and physicals to determine precautions at bedside; observe and chart vitals, breath sounds, and overall condition; document and communicate pertinent information to the nurse.
- Administer prescribed therapies, adjust devices for optimal results, and monitor patient response and tolerance to therapy.
- Provide patient and family instruction on respiratory procedures to facilitate cooperation and understanding; participate in discharge planning and care coordination.
- Perform equipment checks, maintenance, disassembly/reassembly, and ensure adequate supplies are available.
- Support emergency cardio-pulmonary resuscitation as part of the team; maintain CPR certification as required.
- Initiate, administer, evaluate, and document all therapy modalities per departmental procedures and physician orders (e.g., intermittent positive pressure breathing, nebulizers, chest physical therapy, incentive spirometry, sputum induction).
- Document all care services in the medical record and transcribe verbal orders related to respiratory care.
- Instruct residents and families on rationale and methodology of procedures; participate in interdisciplinary rounds and quality assurance activities; adhere to plan of care and timely documentation.
- Engage in equipment troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and calibration as needed; perform other duties as assigned.
- A Respiratory Therapist must possess a NBRC-approved accredited program qualification and at least one year of clinical practice under medical direction.
- Licensure and certification: current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification and State Licensure for a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
- CPR certification required; ongoing professional development and adherence to clinical competencies.
Posted Salary Range
USD $30.00 - USD $33.00 /Hr.
