Position: 2512 - Construction Carpenter II

Responsibilities

  • Perform Journeyman level Carpentry work
  • Read and interpret measuring tools such as tape measure, speed square, framing square, etc. to perform tasks accurately.
  • Read and interpret project plans, blueprints, and other written instructions and diagrams to perform tasks accurately.
  • Fully understand Plant North and drawing coordinates.
  • Set and place forms to proper elevations and location, prepare the base and install proper reinforcing.
  • Experience in setting and erecting forms using a wide variety of materials and forming systems for vertical and horizontal concrete forming.
  • Mark cutting and assembly lines on materials. Shape materials to prescribed measurements and assemble, fasten with nails, dowel pins or glue.
  • Verify accuracy of structures with plumb bob and carpenter’s level.
  • Able to perform general Carpentry tasks such as build and install barricades, decks, shelves, and any other misc. site needs and duties that may come up.
  • Know how to form and finish walls, footers, grade beams, etc.
  • Able to lay out and properly build and place embeds, anchor bolts, etc.
  • Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
  • Be able to assist in placing/tying rebar.
  • Be able to assist in placing and finishing concrete.
  • Disassemble, remove, and clean form materials.
  • Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
  • Work in other crafts at levels appropriate to training and skills as requested by project supervision. Must have the ability to take direction from a higher skilled worker or foreman.
  • Must have basic knowledge of the construction processes involved in heavy industrial construction.
  • Support project with other tasks as directed by supervision.
  • A master Journeyman must be able to direct a small crew and/or mentor Journeyman and helpers.
Qualifications
  • 4 years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • NCCER Certification/License (preferred).
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in Journeyman level role.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Be knowledgeable of MIC Health and Safety programs and project specific regulations.
  • When on‑site, actively participate in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors.
  • Set a personal example of safe behavior.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Add and subtract two‑digit numbers, multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s and perform these operations using units weight measurement and volume.
  • Common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards.
Physical Demands
  • Work up to a 12‑hour shift doing hard physical work in varying temperatures and outside conditions.
  • May need to maintain physical strength and stamina; use arms, hands, and legs fully; push, pull, and frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; and stoop, kneel, balance, crouch, crawl, and climb to perform job tasks.
  • Stamina to perform this task repetitively and continuously for several hour intervals.
  • Uncontrolled environmental conditions: constant change in weather and site conditions.
  • This work environment may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (incl. safety‑toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hardhat, vest, etc.).
  • Move in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas.
  • May need to work at heights and must be able to abide by all safety and fall‑protection requirements; must be able to wear and utilize all safety equipment required for work at heights.
  • Evaluate information based on measurable standards; see details in objects or drawings and recognize slight differences in shapes and shading.
  • Visualize objects in three dimensions from drawings.
  • Keep good balance and work at heights.
  • See well (either naturally or with correction).
  • Hear well (either naturally or with correction).
  • Coordinate the use of eyes, hands, and feet.
