Position Overview
Position: Public Safety Officer I – Armed
Location: Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, IL
Shift: 10:00 pm – 6:30 am (3rd shift)
Scheduling: Registry/PRN – on‑call, scheduled as needed to cover departmental gaps.
Responsibilities- Provide security services with a customer‑service approach, focusing on professionalism, fairness, and compassion in accordance with policies, procedures and training.
- Maintain a professional, approachable appearance; be alert, observant, ethical, and enforce safety and security rules.
- Conduct interior and exterior patrols, inspections, audits of life‑safety measures, contraband searches, and patient‑valet management.
- Ensure traffic control, monitor visitor conduct, confront unauthorized persons for questioning.
- Prevent, respond to, and investigate workplace violence; respond to combative or threatening situations.
- Serve as primary resource for de‑escalation, using force as necessary (CEW, handcuffing).
- Plan and respond to emergencies (lost infants, fire, active threats).
- Investigate incidents on Advocate Health property, complete reports, and address complaints.
- Perform liaison rounding, deliver security awareness education, and collaborate with all departments.
- Coordinate with law enforcement and first responders; brief and monitor prisoner‑patient guards.
- Maintain current training in radio communications, de‑escalation, hemorrhage control (“STOP the BLEED”), CPR, restraint application, CEW.
- Assist with exterior traffic and crowd control, including parking enforcement and valet assistance.
- Utilize interview and interrogation tactics to uncover incident information.
- Patrol with a community‑oriented approach.
- Health‑Care Security Officer (CHSO) certification within two years of appointment.
- North Carolina:
Armed Guard License within one year. - NIMS Compliance Certification.
- Illinois FOID or CCW license; obtain Firearm Control Card within 90 days of hire.
- Stop the Bleed certification within one year of hire.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Certified in Conducted Energy Weapon (TASER) within 90 days of hire and periodic renewal.
- Strong awareness of street drugs, gang activity, and human trafficking.
- High school graduate or GED.
- Approximately one year of experience in security, public safety or customer service, including responding to emergent situations.
- High emotional intelligence, empathetic and compassionate responses.
- Ability to work in a collaborative, respectful environment with kindness.
- Commitment to patient‑centered safety practices.
- Ability to collaborate with medical staff and law enforcement.
- Remains calm under pressure to support a safe environment.
- Positive peer interaction and innovative solutions.
- Passes background investigation, drug screen, pre‑placement physical, and psychological screening; periodic renewals.
- Illinois: 40‑hour armed course with semi‑automatic pistol endorsement, and annual handgun qualification (70%+).
- Willingness to carry department‑authorized firearm, holster, and maintain equipment per policy.
- Strong judgment, courteous and tactful demeanor with verbally aggressive individuals.
- Quick assessment of dangerous situations and appropriate action.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Computer skills:
Microsoft Word, Excel, web navigation, database entry. - Self‑defence ability when de‑escalation fails.
- Effective radio and telephone communication (clear diction).
- Must sit, stand, walk, drive, lift up to 35 lb.; push/pull with similar force.
- Hand strength, dexterity and firearm operation without assistance.
- 20/20 vision or correctable to 20/20.
- May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, and radiation hazards; protective clothing required.
- Operate all necessary equipment; frequent exposure to aggressive and emotionally charged situations.
- Handle personal stress and possible violence; physically fit, able to walk entire facility, restrain individuals, and assist with patient lifts.
