Patrol all areas of the Medical Center, including stairwells and non‑public areas, to prevent and detect fires, theft, vandalism and other security problems. Act as a liaison between patients/visitors and the Medical Center, interpreting the facility’s philosophy, policies, procedures and services to families and visitors. Provide regular reports on patient/visitor issues to administration, investigate inquiries and direct them to appropriate staff.

Assist in referring patients and visitors to appropriate services and resources; respond personally when no alternative is available. Detect violations, contact law enforcement as necessary and represent the Medical Center in any court proceedings. Prepare incident reports and conduct investigations. Assist in managing disruptive patients/visitors or staff and participate in restraining emotionally disturbed patients when summoned. Direct vehicles into available parking spots, re‑park double‑parked cars, note final parking spot on ticket attached to keys and return keys to the keyboard.

Log parking violations and abandoned vehicles. Take on dispatching responsibilities as needed—answer phones, enter information into the computer system, dispatch guards, monitor camera surveillance system and emergency alarm panels. Assume switchboard operator role during midnight shift (12 am‑8 am). Log daily receipts into the daily account sheet at the end of each shift. Provide excellent customer service—display respect, flexibility, knowledge, confidence, professionalism, a pleasant attitude, patience and helpfulness.

Respond in a timely, professional, caring and respectful manner, maintaining departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Identify gaps in policies and procedures and develop necessary new policies. Understand and adhere to the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct and familiarize yourself with the Mission, Vision, and Values Statements.

Undertake driving assignments as required. Attend department meetings, training sessions and workshops. Assist in maintaining department equipment (e.g., charge radio batteries, clean and oil handcuffs). Escort employees to and from the parking lot and other buildings. Prepare and maintain department reports and records. Lock or unlock doors to offices, closets, etc., upon employee request and when authorized. Engage in professional growth through education programs, literature review and workshops.

Perform other related duties as required to support overall departmental and organizational objectives.

Must pass a security guard test and/or have approved training through Bergen County Police & Fire Academy (preferred). Ability to drive standard shift cars. Good oral and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills. English – speaking, reading, writing at required level; second language knowledge preferred. Valid driver’s license. High School Diploma or GED (required).

Contact with patients, visitors, employees, and others across all hospital areas. Subject to unpredictable foot conditions, climbing stairs, manually lifting > 40 lbs, prolonged periods in elevators, responding to calls, enforcing rules and regulations. Frequent prolonged standing/walking. Physical force may be used to restrain individuals when necessary.

Salary commensurate with experience within posted range. Differential pay:
SWITCHBOARD $2.25/EVENING, NIGHT SHIFT $1.30, WEEKEND $1.60, ACTING SUPERVISOR $2.00. Additional $1.00 per security certification through IAHSS.
