Report To: Principal and/or Head Custodian, Building/Supervisor/Manager/Director

Job Goal: To provide students, teachers, staff, and community members with a safe, clean, disinfected classroom and school conducive to learning-development-playing environment.

• Certification of good health signed by a licensed physician.
• Ability to bend, stoop, twist, walk, carry and lift for eight hours per day including overtime.
• Ability to lift 20-50 lbs.
• Must have a current valid New Jersey driver's license.
• Sufficient strength, agility, and dexterity to perform required tasks.
• Ability to use minor tools including drill to fasten and remove screws and assemble furniture.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work.
• Demonstrated aptitude for successful fulfillment of assigned performance responsibilities.
• Possess a Black Seal Fireman's License for Low Pressure boiler operation (preferred).
• Must obtain the Low-Pressure Black Seal License within two years of employment.
• Ability to be on call, after hours for emergency assistance to the building/school if needed.
• Must be able to perform snow & ice removal with shovel, ice scrapers & walkway snow blowers.
• Must be able to speak, write and comprehend English.
• Must be able during the summer adjust work shift to perform summer cleaning on 1st shift.
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
• Capable of climbing various sized ladders & climbing wall-mounted roof hatch ladders.
• Must have at least 3-5 years past experience in cleaning at a school facility environment or commercial.
• Possession of a High School diploma or GED preferred.

• Possesses and demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform cleaning, disinfecting and custodial tasks.
• Plans and prepares for assignments to ensure effective and efficient completion.
• Responsible for daily work schedule assignment list.
• Responsible for maintaining work cleaning cart and assigned custodial closet.
• Must maintain all ready to use custodial supplies in the assigned custodial closet.
• Cleans and maintains the school building and grounds including classrooms, library, halls, auditoriums, gyms, multi-purpose rooms, offices, teachers' room, copier room, storage rooms, boiler rooms & electrical/mechanical rooms. Also restrooms and boys & girls bathrooms as assigned on the day, evening, or night shift.
• Keeps building and exterior premises, including sidewalks, walkways, driveways, courtyards and play areas neat and clean at all times.
• Performs a daily security inspection check before and after one's shift.
• Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to insure economical use of fuel, water, and electricity.
• Responsible for snow removal. Using shovels, scrapers, salt spreaders, walk behind snow blowers and small back pack leaf blowers on sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, landings, steps as needed.
• Raises the United States flag at or before 8 a.m. each school day and lowers it at or after 3:30 p.m.
• Sweeps & mops classrooms & corridors, dusts furniture, cleans desks & chairs and all chalkboards, white boards.
• Empties classroom-offices-bathrooms wastebaskets daily.
• Cleans corridors after school hours each day and during the school day.
• Scrubs fixtures, disinfects bathroom floors and toilets, empties and sanitizes all receptacles and drinking fountains on a daily basis.
• Performs disinfecting of "touch spots" throughout the building: door knobs, railings, faucets, push/pull plates.
• Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year and more frequently if necessary. Also cleans mirrors daily. Secures any broken windows and reports to the principal or immediate supervisor/head custodian.
• Makes minor repairs to buildings and premises when requested including assembling furniture.
• Maintains the school grounds. Keeps the grounds free from rubbish and glass.
• Empties exterior waste or recycle bins periodically when reaching full capacity.
• Performs such yard keeping chores as grass cutting, tree trimming, and the like, as necessary, to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
• Maintains on a regular schedule all boilers, motors, and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing and records in the boiler log book and reports to immediate supervisors of any concerns.
• Performs a variety of room arranging, equipment and furniture transporting, and storage and delivery tasks in the school.
