The Estimating Assistant helps prepare accurate and competitive estimates for wet utility projects including underground water, sewer, and storm drain systems. This position is designed for individuals seeking to build a career in construction estimating by learning the fundamentals of on-screen takeoff, bid preparation, and preconstruction management under the guidance of experienced estimators and project managers.
Key Responsibilities- Review drawings, specifications, and addenda to identify relevant scope and project viability.
- Complete takeoffs for wet utility projects (sewer, storm drain, domestic/fire water, reclaimed water, etc.) using Plan Swift and zz Takeoff.
- Manage RFQs for quoted items such as concrete structures, valves, and appurtenances. Request and manage subcontractor proposals as required by project scope.
- Assist with pricing takeoffs in HCSS Heavy Bid and assembling bid proposals.
- Assist with maintaining and updating VDB’s pricing database, which includes labor values, assemblies, unit pricing, and historical cost records.
- Complete site visits as required to understand field conditions, access constraints, and tie-in requirements.
- Support the team in maintaining bid calendars, pre-bid logs, and proposal documentation.
- Continue to take on more estimating responsibilities as needed. The Estimating Assistant must be highly motivated to develop the skills and experience necessary to become a successful Junior Estimator.
- A strong interest in Construction Management is required. The Estimating Assistant must be highly motivated to learn and grow within the Construction industry.
- 0–2 years of experience of relevant field experience and / or office experience as a Project Engineer is highly desirable.
- Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written). Must be comfortable talking with clients via email, phone and in-person at job walks and other events.
- Basic understanding of civil plans, specifications, and other related construction documents.
- Strong math, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Must have strong computer skills. Must be proficient with Microsoft Excel and Bluebeam. Exposure to Plan Swift, HCSS, and other construction estimating software or similar software is a plus.
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
