Parks Maintenance Technician

Overview

This is a skilled manual work position in general maintenance, construction activities of grounds, turf parks, playground and athletic playing fields. A full range of landscape and turf maintenance responsibilities will be engaged. Work also involves the operation, maintenance and security of the County Pier facilities and involves public contact with facility users. Work may be carried on during the day, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.

• Performs tasks in repair/maintenance of buildings, equipment, apparatus and facilities.
• Utilizes tools and equipment in construction and maintenance activities.
• Performs cleaning of equipment and facilities.
• Performs custodial and litter/trash control duties.
• Performs duties associated with security.
• Mows, trims, edges, fertilizes and waters parks, playing fields and other landscaped areas; weeds, prunes, mulches, fertilizes and sprays trees, plants, and shrubbery; prepares soil for planting, seeds and re-sods lawn area; plants trees, seedlings, and shrubs.
• Grooms and prepares athletic playing fields and other landscaped areas for scheduled sporting events and public use.
• Assists in application of fertilizers, pesticides and non-restrictive insecticide and herbicides to athletic fields, lawns, flowers, shrubs and trees.
• Repairs and maintains irrigation systems; adjusts repairs and replaces timing mechanisms.
• Performs renovations and retrofits of athletic playing fields.
• Performs plumbing work in repairing valves and fixtures.
• Ensures that parking lots in an assigned pier area are cleared of all unauthorized vehicles and entrances are unlocked or locked when required.
• Makes periodic checks of assigned areas and facilities to protect County property by watching for prowlers, fires and ward off vandalism.
• Serves as an attendant using a computerized cash register.
• Maintains inventory and daily safety and activities reports.
• Collects fees or checks passes from people entering pier, meets visitors and provides assistance as required. Assists the public with information, provides weather conditions, water temperature and flag conditions.
• Provides assistance in the routine maintenance, care of pier equipment and facilities in an assigned area.
• Provides assistance in the routine operational and serving phases of pier activities.
• The employer may add to or change duties at any time and as determined by the County and its leaders to best ensure that the public is served through the work of the Department.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• High school diploma or the equivalent; AND
• Experience in performing general maintenance work and turf maintenance, including experience specializing in athletic playing field turf maintenance or park turf maintenance to include Bermuda grasses, irrigation and chemical application; AND
• Cash handling experience necessary.
• An equivalent combination of training experience.

• Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program.
• Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a Limited Lawn & Ornamental Certification within one (1) year of hire as a condition of employment.
• Knowledge of proper safety practices and procedures in the operation of equipment.
• Knowledge of the use and care of tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of the rules and regulations regarding pier operations and the ability to enforce these in a fair and impartial manner.
• Knowledge of methods and techniques associated with soil preparation and enrichment, planting, transplanting, cultivation, pruning, and maintaining a variety of lawns, ground covers, plants, shrubs, hedges and trees.
• Knowledge of project management and organizational skills.
• Ability to work and maintain reliable full-time attendance.
• Ability to comprehend, speak, and read the English language.
• Ability to have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.
• Ability to work from blueprints, rough sketches, and oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform a variety of turf maintenance duties such as irrigation system maintenance and repair.
• Ability to acquire specific knowledge, within a reasonable time, regarding activities or places to which assigned.
• Ability to detect improper conduct on the part of facility users and to take necessary action to properly correct or report the condition.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public as necessitated by the work.
• Ability to prepare and maintain simple records of activities.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and supervisors.
• Ability to wear required breathing and safety equipment during extreme weather conditions.
• Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives.
