Job Purpose
The Associate Director, Recreation Fitness and Wellness is responsible for implementing and administering programs in fitness, non-credit instruction, and other wellness initiatives. This role directly supervises full-time and more than 35 part-time staff. Specific responsibilities include program management, recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of professional, student, and contingent staff; development and oversight of operating budgets; development and enforcement of program policies and procedures;
and revenue generation. This position reports to the Interim Executive Director until an ED is hired. This role may also manage the aquatics team and the master swimming team.
- Coordinate the group fitness and recreational class program areas (75 classes per week) for Recreation and Wellness.
- Responsible for the daily management of staff, including the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, scheduling, motivation, and retention.
- Plan, organize, and facilitate training, work assignments, evaluations, and, if needed, disciplinary action for personnel. Trains staff in the use of the recreational facilities and emergency procedures.
- Ensure customer encounters are courteous, respectful, and efficient.
- Ensure staff understand their role as valuable team members within Recreation and Wellness.
- Responsible for inputting/entering fitness program information for all sport and recreation classes and programs into the membership software in alignment with marketing and registration deadlines. Gather, analyze, and report on group fitness and recreational class data.
- Successfully manage accurate online program registration administration, including internal collaborations with cross-functional teams, responding to inquiries in a timely manner, and managing payment systems.
- Work directly with and in close collaboration with the Director of DAPER Academic Programs and other student wellness-based leaders on specific functions, projects, and programs, including instructor education and development.
- Contribute to the budget planning process, tracking annual expenditures.
- Regularly collect satisfaction surveys and customer response forms; create reports and recommend solutions.
- Ensure prompt and effective verbal and written communication with staff, participants, rosters, and supervisor based on daily program needs.
- Teach classes as needed.
- Oversee the management and implementation of group fitness and recreational class programs.
- Conduct group training, recreational classes, and/or group fitness sessions regularly to maintain skills and professional pedagogy.
- Manage the life cycle of employees, including hiring, onboarding, training, and evaluation of 60+ part-time instructors.
- Manage program operations as it pertains to the space and scheduling of group fitness studios, scheduling of instructors in partnership with other relevant recreational facilities.
- Review and recommend policies and procedures to include facility access, emergency action plans, standard operating procedures, and safety standards.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with University and/or community representatives, vendors, and other regular contacts to meet the objectives of the fitness program.
- Serve on Recreation and Wellness, DAPER, and campus committees as directed.
- Provide assistance for major events as requested.
- Conduct other duties and assist other Recreation and Wellness staff as necessary.
Education and Experience
