Stanford Athletics is seeking a full-time Assistant Director of Sports Nutrition and Coordinator of Medical Nutrition Therapy to collaborate with Sports Performance and Sports Medicine to provide a comprehensive approach to student-athletes’ health and performance. The role includes nutrition counseling and medical nutrition therapy for individual student-athletes, teams, and coaches; and nutrition-focused performance assessment for individuals and teams. Additional responsibilities include oversight and coordination of a student workforce to maintain fueling stations, reviewing and distributing nutritional supplements, and coordinating staff and program professional development.

The position reports to the Assistant Athletics Director, Sports Nutrition, emphasizes football, and serves as the team lead for assigned Olympic teams.

Responsibilities
  • Provide medical nutrition therapy to individual athletes, including individualized pre- and post-operative nutrition counseling.
  • Assess individual athlete blood chemistries to address vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
  • Develop nutrition and supplementation strategies to address acute performance issues (cramping, nausea, dehydration, etc.).
  • Coordinate with Team Physicians, Physical Therapists, Athletic Trainers, and Sports Performance Coaches to assess the nutritional needs of athletes for the return-to-play process.
  • Provide nutritional support to improve athlete well-being and health in collaboration with Team Physicians, Physical Therapists, Athletic Trainers, and Sports Performance coaches.
  • Collaborate with clinic staff to address athlete vitamin/mineral deficiencies and distribute appropriate supplementation.
  • Coordinate yearly team performance labs with medical clinic staff.
  • Create nutrition-focused performance tracking strategies to assess the effectiveness of performance nutrition and MNT interventions.
  • Assess athlete body composition via Bod Pod (when appropriate) and communicate results effectively.
  • Provide individual nutrition counseling, performance nutrition education, and educational materials to teams.
  • Assist in recruiting, training, and supervising undergraduate student employees/fueling station aides and maintain day-to-day oversight of the fueling station.
  • Assist with continuing education and professional development of staff and student employees.
  • Assist in developing and implementing sports nutrition policies and procedures.
  • Integrate point-of-service nutrition education into the athletes’ fueling station experience.
  • Maintain knowledge of special diets, allergies, and intolerances, and communicate this information with the sports medicine team and student athletes to support individualized needs.
  • Provide periodic presence at team practices, games, and other scheduled events.
Education And Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in nutritional science, dietetics, or related field and one to three years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Current Dietetic Registration and maintenance of continuing education requirements established by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Proficiency in sports nutrition, including experience in collegiate or professional settings.
  • Proficiency in use of EMR systems to assess and communicate athlete PHI in a safe, effective manner.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA guidelines as they relate to communicating student-athlete health status regarding sport participation.
  • Knowledge of NSF/Informed Sport Supplements, protocols, and appropriate applications.
  • Stay up to date on peer-reviewed research related to athletic performance, performance nutrition, and medical nutrition therapy.
